    Under Age 19: 1300 mg
    Age 19 and Over: 1000 mg


    Men
    Age 9 to 18 years: 1300 mg

    Over Age 51 years: 1200 mg


    These recommendations were published by the National Academy of Sciences in 2004.

    Calcium, magnesium, and zinc are three of the most important minerals the body needs to maintain good health. Calcium and magnesium help maintain healthy bones while zinc is essential for cell division and growth.

    Although calcium isn't made by the body, it's commonly the most abundant mineral in the human body. Average healthy males have about two and a half to three pounds of calcium in their bodies while females have about two pounds. Approximately 98 percent of calcium is found in the bones and teeth.

    Iodine is also essential for calcium absorption. If you aren't getting enough iodine in your diet, your body can't utilize calcium properly.

    For many years, doctors often suggested that women especially supplement with calcium to prevent osteoporosis. They were assumed to be safe because they were an all natural remedy. However, the delivery system turned out to be flawed. Supplements can cause calcium levels to increase above the normal ranges, and this flooding effect may turn out to be harmful to the heart.

    2012 Study of Calcium



    The study of approximately 24,000 people ages 35 to 64 found that participants who took calcium supplements regularly were 86 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack than those who did not. Calcium has also been linked to kidney stones and bloating in other studies, according to the National Institutes of Health.

    Does this mean you shouldn't take calcium? Heck no! It may however, be prudent to take smaller doses in intervals, several times a day instead of all at once. If that's too inconvenient, you can buy time-released calcium so its delivered into your system slowly over time. Everyone needs to assist building strong bones, especially the elderly, those with other risks, or if you don't consume a lot of dairy products!

    While the most important function of calcium supplement involves the maintenance of skeletal health, the small percentage of calcium [outside the bones and teeth] is used to maintain a large combination of vital body functions. For good overall health, take all three of these important minerals together. They help your bodies overall function and work in unison. It is also important to note that vitamin d is also needed for better absorption.
