Weight Gain Over Time Makes You Older and Fatter

There are many contributors to weight gain. The older you get, the fatter you seem to become. Its easy to take on the middle age spread as there are a number of reasons pack on the pounds. The more contributors you have, the more baggage you are bound to carry.

People are under a fantastic amount of pressure these days! Life is challenging! However, the more weight you add on, the harder you are making it for yourself!

All of those worries are bound to show up in negative ways eventually. Unfortunately, it usually presents itself in ways that affect your health. Few people have time to worry about whether or not they’re gaining weight. Weight gain usually comes as an epiphany when you get dressed one day and discover your clothes are getting way too small!

Many people put on pounds in spurts; i.e. a few pounds here and a few pounds there. Weight gain occurs as a consequence of emotional eating, binge-eating, hormonal changes, life-style changes, injury, illness, sleep deprivation, or lack of physical activity. Bursts of weight gain are maladaptive responses to a variety of stress, anxiety, and/or depression.

These factors are not mutually exclusive and tend to overlap as you grow older. Often a lifestyle pattern of weight gain will also be associated with emotional eating, followed by increased metabolic disturbances and food allergies which are all aggravated by aging. The mid thirties to early forties are pivotal years. If you don’t change dysfunctional habits by then, your health problems may begin to multiply.

The tendency in affluent countries is to overeat and drink, accepting both weight problems and disease as a consequence. Self-indulgence, sedentary occupations, and little physical exercise combine and produce overweight people.

Food may be digested slowly and gradually or simply sit in the intestinal tract and not move at all. High-fat and high-sugar meals, alcoholic beverages, desserts, and snacks are often to blame. Weight is gained progressively often with brief interludes of weight loss on weight-reduction diets, followed by a resumption of packing on the pounds.

Reasons for Weight Gain



1) Eating too fast – When you eat too fast, you can’t digest your food properly. High stress jobs and hurried lifestyles are top contributors to eating too fast. Digestion starts in the mouth. Each bite of food should realistically be chewed 40-60 times to make food easier to digest. The faster you eat, the less you notice when you're full and the more weight you gain!

2) Stagnation – Many people have jobs that require that they sit at a desk all day. Inactivity is one of the leading contributors to weight gain. If you have a job that requires that you sit all day long, learn to exercise before or after work. A nice morning or late afternoon walk can alleviate stress and help shed unwanted pounds.

3) Hypothyroidism - Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to run your body's metabolism, people with this condition have a slower metabolism. Over five million Americans have hypothyroidism and as many as 10 percent of women may have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency. Hypothyroidism is very common but is most people don’t know to have it checked when they have unexplainable weight gain.

4) Stress – Most people have high demand lifestyles. We are required to do more and achieve more in less time. Higher demands increase stress and anxiety. The more stress you have the more it affects your moods and emotions. Stress responses trigger a biochemical process that forces our bodies into a survival mode. Instead of burning off fat, your body holds onto it, slows down metabolism, and dumps chemicals like cortisol and leptin into your body which are likely to cause belly fat.

5) Depression - Depression and excess weight usually go hand in hand. Weight gain can become a vicious cycle if you eat out of boredom, loneliness, isolation or emotional reasons. You may feel depressed because of your food habits so you eat more trying to get those feel good feelings again. Comfort foods are usually sugary, unhealthy foods that only bring temporary comfort. If the cycle isn’t broken, depression can get worse and that can cause more weight gain which can be very detrimental to your health.

6) Drugs - Some prescription drugs used to treat depression, mood disorders, seizures, migraines, blood pressure, and diabetes can cause weight gain. Steroids, hormone replacement therapy, and even oral contraceptives may also cause a gradual increase in weight. Your medicine may be the cause of your weight gain if you've gained 5 or more pounds in a month and haven’t deviated from your usual lifestyle.

Many drugs have different side effects that can cause you to gain weight. These can range from an increased appetite which alters the way fat is stored. Not all drugs have the same side effects on all people.

Antidepressants may cause weight gain which isn't related to the drug itself. If you’re feeling better you may have a heartier appetite so you may eat more. Some drugs can cause fluid retention that presents as weight gain but is usually corrected by changing prescriptions. The most common conditions that have medications that cause weight gain are; Depression, Bi-Polar, AIDS, Parkinson’s, Kidney Disease, Schizophrenia, Diabetes, High blood pressure, Cancer and Heartburn.

7) Availability – Fast food is one of the largest culprits to weight gain. Food served in fast food chains and even most restaurants are packed full of high fat, low fiber foods. Supersized portions of greasy, unhealthy French fries, huge burgers, and sugary drinks all pack on the pounds. The more you eat them, the more you’ll gain weight.

8) Food Allergies – You may not know it but you may be gaining weight because of a food allergy. Some food allergies you’re born with and others may come to exist over time. Most people are allergic to lactose found in milk products and wheat gluten found in more products than you can imagine. Other food allergies can develop however. Instead of out growing them, you grow into them. Food sensitivities may cause allergic people to crave those foods to which they are allergic. Just as a drug addict suffers withdrawal symptoms when the drug is taken away, allergic people experience discomfort when they lose access to a particular food.

It is common that the same food may cause different reactions among different people. An individual’s genetic predisposition to allergies will determine which part of his body will become the vulnerable. Any major organ may become involved. Symptoms of food allergies include hyperactivity, depression, irritability, headaches and some forms of schizophrenia.

Hypoglycemia is a manifestation of pancreatic malfunction, frequently caused by an allergy; while in other cases, blood vessel irritation may cause vasculitis and edema. The symptoms are compounded and are more severe following frequent contact with an allergy-provoking food. Water retention, or edema, is particularly common among allergic individuals and is an important contributing factor to obesity. The removal of an offending food will often result in a rapid water loss of five to ten pounds within a week’s time, all without the use of a diuretic.

9) Food Triggers - Trigger foods are any foods that trigger you to overeat and binge. They are foods that you just can’t get enough of! Some people may have only one trigger food like ice cream, but for others, overeating could be triggered by anything sweet, salty, or fatty. Usually trigger foods contain refined sugar, eggs, flour, and milk. Obese people can testify to the overwhelming power of food. Compulsive eaters crave and continue to eat those foods to which they are addicted day after day. The obese person has no idea that his daily food cravings are based on a physiological need to stop withdrawal symptoms caused by food addiction.

If you have a traditional eating pattern, food is an important part of your daily schedule and meals are well thought out. You follow traditional cooking patterns, have three meals a day, and tend to socialize and reward yourself with drinks, snacks, and desserts. The problem is that there is always too much food and too little exercise.

Most people are motivated by pleasure, convenience, social expectations, and family traditions. Food may have become your main focus over time. Revising your diet is a daunting task because of the convenience of and investment in your food preferences and habits. Changing your lifestyle to include foods rich in nutrients is doable however it does take some effort. Long term healthy choices will give you the most benefit.

The biggest benefit to weight loss is that you can reverse many illnesses or ailments that you had when you were overweight and be able to live drug free. Weight gain doesn't have to happen to you! Live simply and find the healthy you that lurks within!
