Very Dark Hair Color to Very Light Hair Color
by Missy
(Atlanta, GA)
I have naturally dirty blonde hair, currently dyed black. It's extremely curly (after a few hours of not brushing it, it forms spirals that resemble dreadlocks) and it's in horrible shape. In the front it's about 16 inches (straightened) and in the back it doesn't cover my neck.
a) What are some steps to help re-nourish it as preparation for going to pure white?
b) What to you think would be the best steps to take as far as dying my hair pure white?
Thank you, Missy

Missy, you are right! First need to get your hair back into shape before you worry about coloring it a light color. I suggest that you use a few deep conditioning treatments with protein before you even think about changing the color. I also suggest that you
trim your hair to get rid of fried or
split hair ends.
Once you have relatively
healthy hair, you can think about changing the color. However, going from a very dark color to a very light platinum color will be extremely hard on your hair. You are likely to end up with
hair damage again! To go from a very dark color to a very light color requires you to remove the dark color from your hair. You can use a color remover or bleach, but that being said, both are very strong chemicals! Once you remove the dark color, (which could take a while!), you will need to recondition it and tone it most probably.
*Side Note: Very few young people look good with almost white hair. White hair is devoid of any color which will make your skin look very drab and sallow.
I suggest you rethink this through and first concentrate on getting your hair back in shape.
The best idea to change your hair color back to it's blonde color, is to have a professional do it for you. If they mess up your hair or it turns a strange color, they'll have to fix it. Problem is, that with the current condition of your hair (according to what you've told me), no one will want to touch it until you get your hair in better condition.
If you are bound and determined to keep coloring your own hair in the future, you need to know some color basics. You can grab an inexpensive copy of the
2009 Hair Color Guide until December 25th. You will learn a lot and it should help when you're making hair color decisions in the future.
