Too Many Perms and My Hair is Breaking Off

Q) If I have gotten too many perms in the past that its causing my hair to break?

Really, I am just simply just tired of getting them too. My hair is constantly breaking off at the ends. Is that from the perms? Will I have to stop getting perms so that my hair stops breaking at the ends?

Professional Hair Care Answer - Most of the newer perms on the market are low acid perms that only cause minimal damage to your hair. However, over time, too many perms can damage your hair shaft and that can lead to hair breakage. Perms can (and will) especially damage the ends of your hair if the perms are not properly wrapped.

Right now, please stay away from perms. You need to let your hair rest. If your hair is irreparable, you may have to get it all cut off and start over.

Keep your ends trimmed too. That always helps with breakage. If you want a trim when you get perms, have your hairdresser trim your hair AFTER the perm, not before.

If your hair is still in condition, except on the ends, a good leave in conditioner like Infusium Leave In Conditioner will really help, as will smoothing products like L'Oreal Professional Liss Extreme Enriching, Smoothing Masque. These type of products help to smooth the cuticle of your hair shaft down and help reduce breakage.

Something else to do is to smooth your hair down during the day with your hands. Oils build up on your hands in the course of a day and can help smooth the cuticle down, which means you'll have less frizzy hair.

I would suggest trying the new product from Dove. Its a new product that came out recently for damaged hair. Its getting great reviews and you can find the product below.

There are also good hair remedies you can fix right at home that help with dry hair and breakage and some good deep conditioners listed below.

You can also try organic hair products. They are great products to use because they don't have any harsh chemicals in them! A newer line to try is Loreal Everpure Products. Its sulfate free, which has less drying effects on your hair, over time.
