Tight Curly Perm

by Patrica
(Gainesville, Florida)

This was many years ago, but the nightmare has lasted me my whole life. At 18 I wanted hair just like Rod Stewart. (A shag when they had just became popular.) I couldn't recall Rod Stewart's name to give the stylist a reference because he was new to the public at the time.

So I tried to describe his hair style to her. I had lovely, thick, dark, straight hair but wanted some curl as well as I wanted it cut into a shag.

Well, the end product left me looking like Harpo Marks... if anyone knows who he is. I walked out with a head full of tight curls and absolutely no style whatsoever. I was devastated and told the stylist that it looked nothing like what I wanted.

She couldn't give me an explanation except that maybe she left the perm in too long. She was clueless. I actually paid her and went home and put a bandana on my head and kept it there for what seemed like weeks. My boyfriend was understanding but also found it funny. I caught him laughing at it one morning. It took over a year before I felt comfortable with my hair again. Needless to say, NEVER AGAIN have I ever permed my hair. Scared for life.

Looking back it's funny now.

Woops! I think I snickered a little bit too... Sorry:o)

Gosh, I've had tight perms before but would never let them give me a really tight curly perm. (White rods are the way to go or either larger spiral rods!) (Rod Stewart... rods... Oh, I'm just silly tonight!)

I do know what bad haircuts and bad salon experiences can do though. I used to have nightmares when I was growing up, that my mom took me to get my hair cut and they whacked it all off. I would wake up crying my little brown eyes out... At the time, I was terrified of scissors! lol

Glad you haven't tried any curly perms again though. Long, thick, straight hair is gorgeous, just the way it is!
