Thin Hair After Childbirth

Hey there! My hair used to be very shiny, silky, straight, and healthy when I was around 16 years old. That’s when I decided to lose weight by giving up rice. I lost weight and increased my water intake and ate plenty of fruits and veggies. My weight loss has resulted in hair loss though.

I had long hair but cut it, thinking it would come back. It has improved slightly now. I’m 22 and breast-feeding an 11 month old. My hair has a lot of frizz in the bottom but at the top, its thinning and showing my scalp. All of my hair seems to be brittle too!

I want to know why this happened and how I can get my old hair back? I want to improve the texture and health of my hair! Can you help me?

Hormones are a cruel thing! Your hormones haven't had a chance to return to normal because you are still breast-feeding your child. As long as you keep breast-feeding, your hormones cannot return to normal.

Most women lose hair after childbirth. (This is completely normal.) It could be that the combination of your weight loss combined with a flux in hormones, affected your hair twice fold.

Another reason for hair loss in women, is a low thyroid function. It can be caused by an iodine deficiency. I suspect this could be part of the problem since you were on a low fat/low carbohydrate diet before you got pregnant.

You can increase your thyroid function just by using more sea salt with iodine, or by taking iodine supplements. Most people need around 12 milligrams a day.
