Thick Poofy Hair! I Can’t Stand It!

Q) I have EXTREMELY thick poofy hair. I can't wear it out because if I do it looks like a giant triangle attached to my head.

I would LOVE to cut it short but I know I cant because it would just poof out even more, I have it layered and I get it thinned out all the time but within a week its back to its normal thickness. At the moment its down near my lower back and yet its still boofy. I can't even wear it in a regular ponytail because it poofs that much, its ALWAYS in a plat. WHAT CAN I DO!?!?

Professional Hair Care Tips - I have thick poofy hair too, especially when the humidity is high! However, it sounds to me like you've got very thick coarse hair, while I have very thick fine hair. (But you may have fine hair too, just hard to say cause you didn't tell me.)

Here are a few tips:

When you condition, don't rinse all of the conditioner out. Leave some of it in your hair. Stay under the water for a count of 10 while conditioner is on your hair, then get out of the water. Conditioners left on the hair help coat it. If you can, rinse with cool/cold water. This seals in the conditioner. Or you can simply use a good leave in conditioner.

Comb your hair out after you shampoo. Never brush it. Use a pick of a wide toothed comb only. Contrary to popular belief, using straightening irons and blow dryers only makes your hair more frizzy as these are very drying to your hair over time. Even if you use a thermal hair protector before you use hot irons, or even if you use ceramic irons, they can damage your hair eventually.

Products that might help thick poofy hair are hair masks and most of the anti frizz products work well too. I love Secret Weapon Finishing Creme by John Frieda, but there are many anti frizz products on the market! You can also buy smoothing shampoos and conditioners that help lay down your hair cuticle, which helps it look sleek.

Every once in a while, (6 weeks) do a hair cholesterol treatment. These are great on any hair type but especially on thick poofy hair or coarse hair as they were originally made for African American Hair. To apply it correctly, just watch my video about hair cholesterol.

Conditioning treatment home remedy is one egg, one part mayonnaise, and one part olive oil. Apply it to your hair, wrap your hair in a towel and leave it for half an hour or so. Then rinse.

Of course, you should also check out this list of home remedies too. You may find a hair treatment you like better.

More tips:

Check the ingredients of the products you use. Don't wash your hair in shampoos that contain sodium laureth/lauryl or ammonium laureth/lauryl sulfate. These ingredients are fine for normal hair to oily hair, but on frizzy hair they can strip natural oils and dry your hair out more. That only makes your poofy hair worse! Look for shampoos with ingredients like these: Apricotamidopropyl Betaine and Cocoamidapropyl Betaine. An inexpensive new one to try is Loreal Everpure.

When you rinse your hair, try a final vinegar and water cool rinse! Vinegar will help strip old products off your hair and restore your natural PH balance. This also helps to calm the hair cuticle down. Nano and Ionic hair appliances also help calm down your hair. More tips for frizzy hair.

You said you get your hair thinned but your hairdresser might be doing this too often. Only get your hair thinned once every 8-12 weeks, if even that. Thinning your hair too often can make it poofier. If you get it thinned too much, it will only build volume! Layers are not a good idea. Why? Because when you have your hair all one layer, it is heavier and will help weigh down your hair. Layers create volume by creating less weight. Don't get layers!

Organic products like Wen Hair Products can also help to restore luster and shine to your hair. These products don't have chemicals in them that strip your hair and make it dry, which in turn makes it frizz! Try organic hair products that promise to smooth or defrizz your hair!
