Q) I get massive rats and tangles in hair when I'm sleeping.
It really snarls up in the back underneath bad. What can I do?
Professional Hair Care Tips - I have the same problem! To solve this problem, I've been wearing my hair up on top of my head for years because of what your describing. I get knots/rats and tangles in my hair too!
When you use a soft, material-type hair tie to pull your hair up off your neck, (like Pebbles Flintstone), you take the tension off your hair when you're tossing and turning or even just rolling over. You will still get some knots, but they'll be far less often if you do this.
It also helps to cut down on the amount of times you'll have to wash your hair per week. I only wash mine a few times per week and that helps with frizz, from all the curls. I also believe that your hair grows faster this way.
The hair on the top of your head, grows upwards because of the way the hair follicles align. Since they grow up, when you wear your hair down, it's growing against the grain. (so to speak) When you pull your hair up, the hair has a natural line of progression for growth.
When you have tangles in hair, the first thing to do is to remove them. I find it much easier to remove tangles by simply wetting my hair a little bit or using a detangler. Hair stretches when its wet so knots are not as hard to remove. Follow these simple steps:
1) Use a spray bottle with water or detangler and spray over the knot.
2) Use a wide tooth comb and start at the bottom of the knot. Gently start removing it one section at a time.
3) Keep working up the knot till all of it is removed. If you try and remove a tangle when your hair is dry, you'll only end up ripping it out of your hair which causes hair breakage.
Other things you can do is to buy a satin pillowcase. I have one and I love them personally. They work great for snarls. (If you don't like your hair up or even if you do!)
Wearing your hair up at night has other perks. You won't get as hot at night with your hair up. A 'breezy neck' feels great, when its up and you're hot!
If you can't stand the rats, you can cut some of them off. Use a hair trimmer and totally get rid of the hair underneath, about 1" off the base of your hair, below your occipital bone. Your hair will lay down a lot better.
To eliminate tangles in hair, keep your hair really moisturized too with good moisturizing conditioners. Use products like John Frieda Satin Shine Finishing Creme underneath where the 'rats' are or use leave in conditioners or detangler's that have leave in control. You'll have a lot less problems if you simply use one after you shampoo!
