How to Tame Hair – Remedies for Frizzy and Curly Hair
Finding the right solution to tame hair that’s frizzy or curly is always the best option.
Sometimes hair seems to have a mind of it's own!
On those occasions, its good to have easy remedies to help control your hair's behavior.
Uncontrollable hair ensues when hair cuticles get lifted. When cuticles aren’t flat, hair can become overly porous and absorb moisture molecules from the air around you. Think about it this way. Tame hair is properly moisturized and conditioned. Frizzy hair happens when hair gets overly dry because of insufficient amounts of moisture.
and curly hair
are very much alike, yet unique. Both types of hair have their own obstacles and caveats. Make your life easier by knowing the right products and best remedies to tame hair that's become a royal pain.
How to Tame Hair – Home Remedies
Argan Oil or Emu Oil
Apply a dime sized amount of either argan oil
or emu oil
(depending on hair length) through wet hair after you condition in the shower. Remove knots and help distribute oils by using a wide toothed comb. Both oils are rich in omega 3 fatty acids
, and can help tame hair, nourish, and moisturize.
Vinegar is one of those amazing products that has so many uses. Use it to smooth hair cuticles often. Simply shampoo as usual, rinse with a mixture of one part vinegar to four parts vinegar. Comb through if possible, then condition and comb through again.
*Tip – Use white vinegar (or lemon juice) on blonde hair. Use apple cider vinegar
on brown or red hair.
Cold Water Rinse
Always use a final rinse of cold water, no matter what hair products you use in the shower. Sure, shivering sucks but you want tame hair, right? Cold water helps add shine by locking down hair cuticles. This makes your hair look silkier and smoother throughout the day.
Help tame hair by mixing one tablespoon of regular honey with two – four cups of water. Pour the mixture through your hair after shampooing, then condition well. Why this works? Honey is an organic humectant, which means that it helps attract and hold more moisture. Tame hair happens when hair is sufficiently nourished with moisture.
Egg and Olive Oil Hair Mask
Crack one large egg into a bowl and beat well. Mix the egg with 1/4 cup of olive oil
. Apply to dry hair and cover with a hair cap for at least 30 minutes or longer. The longer you leave it on, the more it helps tame hair. (Or use a thermal heat cap
if you have one!) Shampoo and condition and be sure to use a final rinse of cold water to help retain moisture.
Banana and Avocado Hair Mask
Mash one very ripe avocado with one ripe banana. (Yes, you must peel them first.) Blend together and apply the mixture onto dry hair
. Massage well into your hair, then cover with a cap. Wait 30 minutes, then rinse until hair feels clean. Shampoo and condition as usual.
*Tip – If you don’t mind things getting a bit messy, use your hands to mash and squeeze the banana and avocado together. It blends them better and you’ll moisturize your hands at the same time.
Mayonnaise Hair Mask
Mayonnaise is so versatile. Not only does it nourish and moisturize your skin, it also does a great job on the scalp and hair! Your hair loves protein and moisture and this mask has both! Mix one raw egg with both 1/4 cup mayonnaise and 1/4 cup olive oil. Apply to hair and cover with a hair cap or towel. Shampoo and condition as normal and allow hair to air dry.
Use a generous amount of any conditioner that contains Moroccan oil
or coconut oil
after shampooing. Rinse with cold water, then comb through. Immediately pull your hair into a high ponytail (Pebble’s method works best) and secure with a soft hair tie. Allow to thoroughly dry before taking out the ponytail. This really helps tame hair.
Tips to Tame Frizzy Hair
Use big rollers either overnight or for a couple of hours. For more control, apply a light spritz of hair gel or a dime sized amount of mousse or hair cream to help set hair before rolling it. Comb through.
Shampoo and condition your hair at night before bed. Use a hair straightening cream for the best results. Twist your hair into a ponytail/bun. In the morning, comb through with your fingers only. It won’t make your hair straight but it will help tame hair!
When you wash your hair at night, always wrap your hair in an old T-shirt or microfiber cloth. Never use terrycloth towels because they make your hair frizzy by rubbing hair cuticles open.
Use organic shampoos and conditioners.
If you have medium to long hair, only shampoo once or twice a week at best. You can co-wash everyday if you like but shampooing should be kept to a minimum.
Allow your hair to air dry until its damp, then use a natural bristle hair brush and blow dryer (set on medium heat) to help straighten and tame hair.
Only blow-dry your hair until it’s about 80 percent dry, then allow hair to air dry the rest of the way. Your hair will be less frizzy and feel less dry.
Use a nourishing leave in conditioner as often as possible.
Before blow drying or using hot irons, use a thermal hair protector.

How to Tame Curly Hair
Curls can pose several problems. Too much moisture can cause your hair to frizz. When there’s not enough moisture, curls look flat. There is a fine balance that must be attained to keep curls in check!
Apply some kind of holding product (gel, mousse, cream) or leave in conditioner, then scrunch dry with an old T-shirt.
Add pin curls along your part and at the crown of your head. Allow to dry, then pick through with fingers only.
Deep conditioning treatments should be done every couple of weeks to retain moisture. The longer your hair is, the more conditioning it needs.
Always use a wide toothed comb after conditioning in the shower. Do not comb out again after showering.
To help tame curls, apply a smoothing product on your hair while it’s still wet, after shampooing and conditioning.
Allow your hair to air dry, but use a root lifter and a blow dryer diffuser on roots to help hold and keep curls at the scalp.
Rake your fingers through your hair after curling it. Hold each section at the ends, then shake out to set your curl pattern.
Use products like HerCut Curly Long Layers Catalyst and Pantene Pro-V Curl-Enhancing Spray to help seal moisture in your hair but prevent it from picking up moisture from the air.
