How to Take Vitamins (or Other Medications) So You Don’t Choke!

Everyone needs to know how to take vitamins or other medications so you don't choke on them. If you become scared to take them and then don't, you won't get any of their benefits!

Many pills have different shapes and sizes that can get caught in your esophagus if they're taken incorrectly. However, there are some easy methods you can use to ensure you get them down safely without coughing them back up!

There seem to be a large amount of people who just don’t know how to properly take pills. In case you're one of those people who can't ever seem to get your pills down without having problems, here are a few tips to help you take vitamins or other pills so you don't go without.

How to Take Vitamins (or Other Medications) So You Don't Choke!

  • Always take pills with a full glass of water. No diet drinks, no cola, no juice. Just water!

  • BEFORE taking any pills, wet your palate. Take a drink of water before you start stuffing pills into your mouth. If your palate is moist, your pills will not stick to your tongue.

  • Separate your round pills from your capsules or caplets. Separate the different shapes and take only the same shaped pills together. This includes large pills and small pills also.

  • For some people, large pills should be taken one by one as they are more likely to get caught in the throat and require plenty of water to get them down.

  • Place the pills in the back of your mouth, but not so far back that you choke on them before you even try to swallow them.

  • DO NOT TILT YOUR HEAD BACKWARDS. This closes the esophagus and makes it hard to swallow anything. Do you eat your food with your head tilted back? Thought not! Keep your head straight and swallow naturally.

  • Don’t try to throw any pill into the back of your throat. Let the water take the pills down your throat where they need to go.

  • Drink plenty of water after taking pills. This helps to wash out the palate and aids the pills in dissolving properly.

  • If you should choke on your pills or have one get caught in your throat, eat a small piece of bread or cracker to force the pill(s) down. Don’t panic! Just reach for a small piece of food, chew it a bit and swallow it. It will keep you from coughing them all up or having to call 911.

  • Another method for choking is to tap or hit the chest bone. I've had to use this method to take vitamins on several occasions myself so it does work!

    Trying to drink more water won't help force the pills or medicines down your throat. It has to a food solid or a forced blow.

    Whether you're taking medications or vitamins doesn't matter. What does matter is taking them on a regular basis. These simple steps will help make sure that you are getting the nutrients your body needs to function properly.

    When you can't eat right all the time, vitamins are essential to good health! When you take vitamins and other medications the right way, you dispel your fears and guarantee that you're benefiting from them.
