Sun In with Hair Color?

by Dana
(Kuwait)

Hi! I used Sun In on my hair about a year ago and now I want to color my hair. Is it possible or will it ruin my hair? Many thanks!

******************

The only time I've seen Sun In cause problems, is during perming. I've actually seen women who didn't tell their stylist about using the product, and ask for a perm. The end result was melted hair that turned to mush basically. Talk about smoking!

Sun In contains metals that counteract with the chemical ingredients in many perms.

I don't think you should have a problem however, with color. Before you apply hair color to all of your hair however, it might be a good idea to do a strand test.

Strand Test

Mix a small amount of color with the same amount of developer. This is called mixing 1:1 and is technically how most colors are mixed. (Especially colors in a box.)

Pull the rest of your hair out of the way and apply the color mixture to one small section of hair only. Usually, a strand test is done on hair thats underneath, just in case a reaction occurs.

However, to get accurate results in your example, you'll need to apply the color mixture to a small section that actually has Sun In on it.

Allow the color mixture to develop, watching it carefully. Time the color according to the product instructions.

Rinse the color out of your hair and then towel dry. If no reaction occurred, you should be able to apply the color safely, without any problems.

If a problem does occur during the developing time, rinse the color out of your hair immediately, and do not color it. In this case, you will be safest to wait until the Sun In has grown out of your hair completely.
