Straight Roots with Curly Hair

by Lauren
(Ohio)

Hi my name is Lauren and on a recent trip to Florida (because of the high humidity), I let a hair stylist put a mild relaxer in my hair. I was very anxious about it because I haven't had a relaxer in two years.

I never cut the relaxer out but after two years it reverted back to being naturally curly. Now that the stylist put the relaxer in, it is still curly but straight at the roots. It has been like a week after the relaxer. My concern is what will my hair look like after its worn off.

I must also add that I have been wearing my hair curly and I like the looser curls but I am curious about what will happen to my hair after my hair starts growing from the roots.

Also, I normally wear my hair down straight, but I don't like the thin limp look which is why I wet it too make it more curly. Just confused my hair was perfect before the relaxer.

Well, that's totally understandable. You are in a bit of a pickle. The relaxer (obviously) didn't take very well!

As your roots grow out, it will have your natural curl pattern. Then you will have curly, straight, and then slightly curly hair. You will have to scrunch the straight hair a bit each time you wash it to regain curl in that area.

Over time, as your hair grows out, the relaxer will lose its pizazz and your hair should eventually revert back to the same curl pattern all over, but it will take time.

You might consider going to have a new relaxer done and have the stylist only retouch the mid shaft hair and ends. Of course, since you are now kinda liking the curl pattern, you may not want to.

Another idea, (since you like the curl pattern), is would you consider getting a perm, instead of a relaxer? You would have to wait a little while until the relaxer has some time to wear off, but its another option you might want to explore!
