Should I Shampoo Everyday to Get Rid of Oily Hair?

Q) Should I shampoo everyday to get rid of oily, greasy hair?

I have long hair and it looks greasy when I wake up everyday if I don't wash it everyday. I know its not good to wash it so often, but my roots just get so oily if I don't. (I just turned 19 last June.)

Professional Hair Care Tips - If you shampoo everyday, you may strip all of the oils out of your hair, especially since it's longer. Sounds to me though like you've just got an over production of sebum going on. When I was your age, I had the same problem. I believe it's your hormones. They make products like Psssssst Instant Spray Shampoo for Normal to Oily Hair, (and others), which helps to take out some of the oils where you apply it. It worked OK for me back when I was a teenager, but after a day, my hair got kinda yucky feeling where I'd applied it, so I had to wash it anyway.

You can use shampoo's for oily hair too, but then you are stripping the oils from the rest of your hair. If you do shampoo everyday, only apply these types of shampoos to your roots where your sebum is formed. Use a conditioning shampoo on the rest of your hair.

This problem should fade as you get older, so don't despair. Realistically, people with long hair should only wash their hair every 3 days. The oils your scalp produces keeps your cuticles of your hair smooth and moisturized.

This is especially important in both the winter months when the elements get so dry and harsh and the summer months when the sun is much more intense. People with short(er) hair, shoulder length or shorter, can wash their hair as often as they like.

If you've got to shampoo everyday to keep the greasies away, I suggest you invest in a good conditioner for your hair to promote shine and to prevent breakage.

Keep in mind that conditioners are only meant to be applied to the mid hair shaft and the ends of the hair. Since you've already got oily hair, don't apply conditioner near your scalp! Thats double trouble!

Also, try to keep your hands off of your hair during the day. You transfer oils from your hands to your hair when you touch it a lot. This should help cut down on your oily hair
