Shampoo and Color Question

Q) - I have a shampoo and color question.

I dye my own hair at home and use professional Wella hair color. I was wondering if I should shampoo after I use it and then condition. Or if I should just condition my hair after use.

Professional Hair Care Tips - Great shampoo and color question! After you color your hair, you should always wash it afterward, then condition it as usual. If you a doing a root color only, do this to refresh your overall color about every third root color:

Take any color that's left over and add about 1/4 - 1/2 cups of warm water and little shampoo to it. Shake it up in the bottle. After you rinse out your root color, squeeze the mixture into your hair and work it through to the ends. Do not rinse. Leave it for a few minutes instead. This is called a soap cap and will help refresh the color throughout your hair. Then shampoo and condition.

Also, when you apply any color to your hair, it actually responds better on hair that is a little bit dirty or hair that's not been washed for a day or longer. Your hair color works better on slightly dirty hair and will eliminate any oils. Many times when I worked as a hairdresser, my clients would come in and tell me how they had washed their hair before they came. They seemed proud of it. Truth was (and I told them many times), that this isn't necessary. Its like cleaning your house before the cleaning lady gets there!

Anytime you color your hair, whether it's a temporary, semi permanent, or permanent color, you must always condition after you wash it out! Conditioners help close the hair cuticles and that helps lock the color in your hair. If you don't condition your hair, your hair cuticles will be left open and your hair can become terribly dry over time. It also will lose color everytime you shampoo and leave your hair looking dull and lifeless. Lesson? Whenever you color, you must always shampoo and then follow up with a good conditioner for color treated hair!
