Safe to Color Hair after Scalp Infection?

by Amy Ngo
(San Jose, CA)

My natural hair color is dark brown/black. I had my hair dyed/bleached blonde back in June. I went back in for a root touch up for about a month ago (august 8, 2010) and after I had the root touch up, I developed a scalp infection called Folliculitis a few days later.

My scalp is healed up now and has recovered. I want to keep my blond hair but I am afraid if I go back for a root touch up, the infection will come back. Is it because the chemical was too strong for my scalp last time? I am planning to go back at the end of October or beginning of November to touch up, do you think that is a good idea? I love my blonde hair so much and don't want to go back to a dark brown color. Any advice or tips?

Since you didn't have an infection the first time, and since your scalp has cleared up so nicely, it should be alright to try this again. Just be sure to tell your hairdresser about the infection before she starts the process. They maybe able to add a conditioner to the bleach or hair color to help neutralize the mixture or use a less harsh product on your hair.

Hair color and/or bleach should never be applied directly to the scalp anyway. It should never be smashed into the scalp! Its supposed to go onto the hair, not the scalp. However, hair color and bleach does expand after application. Perhaps your hairdresser might opt not to apply the product as closely to your scalp.

In the meantime, try massaging your scalp more when you shampoo your hair. Massage helps to encourage better circulation to your scalp and helps to 'toughen it up'.

After you get any chemical service, a good deep conditioner should be applied to your hair. Since you had an infection, use it also on your scalp. Conditioners help to neutralize any chemical process!

In any event, if you do get an infection again, think twice about maintaining your hair color, even as much as you love it. Its just not worth the expense or the scalp ache!
