Root Touch up for Highlights

I have brown hair with blonde highlights and red brown on the ends. I need to get my roots touched up so it matches the blonde highlight. Should I dye it and re-highlight, try touching it up myself, or go to a salon? How much would it cost? I want to keep the red brown, but I also want the old highlights to show. What should I do?

If you have colored brown hair with blonde highlights, (the color of the ends of your hair won't matter), you need to do a root color touch up with brown, and then redo the blonde highlights. (Unless your natural hair color is brown. Then you'd only need add a few more highlights.)
Its simply impossible to match up old highlights so they extend to the roots.
The trick is to not add too many highlights at the same time. You should not highlight your hair more than a couple times a year. When you spread them out over time, you always have some 'unhighlighted' hair to highlight. This way, highlights look more natural when you do get them.
Different salons charge different prices so its impossible to predict how much anyone of them would charge. Your best advise is to get on the phone and call around to the different salons in your local area. They will be able to give you a good idea about costs.
