My Hair Root Color is Different than My Hair Color

Order the WEN® Healthy Hair Care System and receive FREE bonuses

Q) Hi! My hair root color is different than the rest of my hair color.

I've been reading your hair color ebook and am not sure if i have this one figured out. I have #10 for hair color. Over the years i have bought the walmart boxed but never again. I have recently colored my roots and got the color i desired but the rest of my hair is like a #12. Do I put a #10 hair color all over using 20 volume to match it up? Thanks!

Professional Hair Care Answer - Before I suggest something... a few more statements/questions so I'm really clear about this.

  • Your roots are darker than the rest of your hair. Is this correct?
  • The rest of your hair is lighter than (just your) roots. Is this correct?

If these two statements are true, then you can approach this two ways. From what you said, it seems that you want the rest of your hair to match your root color.

Darken Your Hair Color - If you want your root color to match the rest of your hair, I would suggest that you use a 10 level color with a 10 volume peroxide to deposit the color only. Mix 20 volume peroxide 1:1 with water to make a 10 volume peroxide. More info is in your ebook.) You would only apply the color to the rest of your hair but not your roots.

Remember, extremely blonde hair of a level 12 is very porous. Be sure to condition it often to close and lay down your hair cuticle. This will keep you from damaging your hair as much when you brush it or style it. Use hot irons less often and use hot rollers more often. You may also need protein treatments like hask placenta and a good deep conditioner. A new product that really rocks is Root Awakenings. It has a eucalyptus base and works terrific and smells divine. I bought the shampoo, conditioner and the Health Boosting Detangling Hair Spray. (which I like best of all!)

If the color isn't dark enough, next time you color try a level 9 with a 10 volume peroxide in about a week or so. Color used for deposit only does not open the cuticle of your hair. It coats your hair cuticle like a semi permanent color. 10 volume colors are much richer and are gorgeous, so use them when you can.

Lighten Your Roots - Alternately, you may decide you want your root color lighter so it will match the rest of your hair color. In this case, you would color only your roots with a 10 level color and use a 20 volume peroxide, which will lift your root color up to 2 levels. The color should come out a level #12 and match the rest of your hair.

If during the time you're waiting you notice that your roots aren't lifting enough, place a cap on your hair or go sit in the sun. (Or use a heat cap if you have one.) You don't need to color the rest of your hair to 'make it even'.
