Techniques to Relieve Depression Naturally

If you are presently feeling down in the dumps, consider these techniques to relieve depression. Most of them are common sense, but sometimes we need things spelled out in front of us, in order for us to take action.

Depression is a serious illness and should not be taken lightly. New studies show an increase of suicide’s during allergy season’s in the spring. Whether the two are related, we have yet to learn.

Everyone has some ups and downs. After all, sadness is a natural emotion. The normal stresses of life can lead anyone to feel sad every now and then. Things like an argument with a friend, a breakup, doing poorly on a test, not being chosen for a job, or financial woes can lead to feelings of sadness, hurt, and disappointment. These reactions are usually brief and go away in time.

Depression is more than occasionally feeling blue, sad, or down in the dumps, however. Depression is a strong mood involving sadness, discouragement, despair, or hopelessness that lasts for weeks, months, or even longer. It interferes with a person's ability to participate in normal daily life and activities. People who are depressed withdraw from others and sleep a lot. Anxiety is high, energy is low!

Depression affects a person's thoughts, outlook, and behavior as well as mood. In addition to a depressed mood, a person with depression can also feel tired, irritable, and notice sudden changes in appetite. The world can look bleak and the person's thoughts reflect that through feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. People with depression tend to have negative and critical thoughts about themselves. Sometimes, despite their true value, people with depression can feel worthless and unlovable.

Because of feelings of sadness and low energy, people with depression may pull away from those around them or from activities they once enjoyed. This usually makes them feel more lonely and isolated, making the depression and negative thinking worse.

The best way to relieve depression is to get at least 20-30 minutes of aerobic activity at least twice a week. Exercise increases endorphin levels which are feel good chemicals that are released by your body when you participate in aerobic activities. The more you exercise, the better you feel! Another quick way to relieve depression is to get enough sunlight. Two hours of early morning sunlight can help lift depression. If the sun’s not shining, at least spend some time outside.

Breathing fresh air and watching nature can help relax you and get you in a good mood. Taking walks to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty it offers is always good advice to relieve depression. Fresh air and deep breathing exercises are both good in aiding relaxation and promoting plenty of oxygen for your body. Here are some other natural ideas to relieve depression.

Natural Ways to Relieve Depression

1) Drugs, caffeine, black tea, alcohol, cigarettes, and some contraceptives induce depression. Paint solvents or any toxic chemicals are also capable of producing symptoms of depression. If you can, limit the amount of exposure you have.

2) Eat healthy foods if you want to get out of a funk! Junk foods make you feel lousy. When you feel physically inferior, you have a lower self esteem. When you have a lower self esteem, you get depressed.

Use fresh herbs in dishes, eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits, and use more spices when you make meals. Eat wheat germ or honey, which are natural energizers. Pears, apples, and nuts contain bromine which assists the nervous system in proper functioning. Licorice is also a great food that elevates moods. At least eight licorice compounds are MAO inhibitors, which are compounds capable of potent antidepressant action. Just be sure not to exceed using it more than three times a day. It can have adverse effects in amounts greater than that.

3) Set realistic goals and make a list of your top priorities. All the other things on the 'to do' lists will have to wait! If you're feeling overwhelmed by life, now is not the time to volunteer for another fundraiser.

4) Have ethics and morals set high. If you have a gambling problem or other addictive trait, remember your ethics and morals. The higher you set your standards, the less you will be able to feel guiltless about risky behaviors. The more guilt you feel, the less likely you will repeat the behavior.

5) Just because you are feeling low, doesn't mean you have to bring everyone else down around you. Learn to discuss your feelings with others around you, so they are more considerate of your feelings. A little conversation goes a long way! Talking about your feelings is a great way to relieve depression!

6) Listen to some uplifting music. Since everyone has different musical preferences, what types of music elevate you are different from what music elevates others around you. Find the right type of music that elevates your moods and play them often. Music can be soothing to your soul!

7) Pet an animal if you have one or pet a friends animal! Animals have a way of calming nerves and raising hopes. Ten minutes of petting an animal can elevate neurotransmitters that make you feel good! I'm sure the animal will appreciate it too!

8) Join a support group. There are a hundred support groups in every county in every state. Find one that you like and go to them. Just hearing other people talking about their problems can help you get a better perspective of your own problems!

9) Join a forum. Forums are a great place to express your negative feelings and get other people's input.

10) Consider a hobby. If you don't have a hobby you like to do, find one. Put puzzles together, learn quilting, sew a new dress, go shopping (if you can afford it), or learn to cook! All of these hobbies are productive. The more productive you are, the less depressed you will be!

11) Get busy in life! If you sit around watching the news, stock market, or soap operas all day long, you are bound to get depressed! Find something constructive to do instead! Turn off the boob tube and get creative. You could even build a website like I did! An idle mind wastes away!

12) Have a good cry. Crying is a good way to get negative feelings out of you! Everyone needs to release their emotions. Certainly crying is a way of coping and a great way to relieve depression. If crying is something you do more of the time than not, it may be time to seek help from a professional who can help you sort out your negative feelings.

13) Eat some chocolate. One of the most pleasant effects of eating chocolate are the 'warm fuzzies' that many people experience after eating it. Chocolate contains more than 300 known chemicals. Caffeine is the most well known of these chemicals, but chocolate contains only small amounts of it. Theobromine, a weak stimulant, is also present, in slightly higher amounts. The combination of these two chemicals (and maybe others) may provide the "lift" that chocolate eaters experience.

Phenylethylamine is also found in chocolate. It's related to amphetamines, which are strong stimulants. All of these stimulants increase the activity of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) in parts of the brain that control our ability to pay attention and stay alert.

14) Calcium and magnesium, work synergistically; that is they work with each other, hand in hand. When your body lacks these vital nutrients, it becomes out of balance. Doctors treating depression, usually opt for prescription medicines or tranquilizers that also deplete their supply.

15) Watch a comedy! It's a great way to relieve depression. Laughing out loud can really elevate your mood! Watching something funny on TV or a funny movie can really bring you out of a bad mood! Comedy is therapy for many people as laughing helps release those feel good neurotransmitters in your brain!

If you want to relieve depression, you can also opt for a nice hot shower to help relax you. Finish off with a stimulating shot of cooler water to help energize you! All of these things can help you relieve your depression and get back on track with new life experiences!
