How to Relieve Depression Naturally

A simple way to relieve depression is to use natural techniques when possible. Many natural remedies are often overlooked because of the fast track world in which we live.

Folks have gotten used to popping a prescription drug to fix things. That's all well and dandy if you're comfortable doing so and the treatments are working. However, if they're not quite doing the trick for you, then maybe something natural might help! Heck, they've been used for thousands of years with efficacy so what's stopping you?

Everyone has some ups and downs. Things like an argument with a friend, a breakup, doing poorly on a test, not being chosen for a job, or financial woes can lead to feelings of sadness, hurt, and disappointment. These reactions are usually brief and go away in time.

Depression however, is more than occasionally feeling lonely and sad. Depression lasts for weeks, months, or even longer. It interferes with a person's ability to participate in normal daily life and activities. People who are depressed withdraw from others and sleep a lot. Anxiety is high, energy is low!

Depression affects a person's thoughts, outlook, and behavior as well as mood. In addition to a depressed mood, a person with depression can also feel tired, irritable, and notice sudden changes in appetite. The world can look bleak and the person's thoughts reflect that through feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. People with depression tend to have negative and critical thoughts about themselves. Sometimes, despite their true value, people with depression can feel worthless and unlovable.

People with depression may pull away from those around them or from activities they once enjoyed. This usually makes them feel more lonely and isolated, making the depression and negative thinking far worse.

The easiest way to relieve depression is to get at least 20-30 minutes of aerobic activity at least twice a week. Exercise increases endorphins (feel good chemicals) that are released by your body as you exercise. The more you move, the better you feel! Another quick way to relieve depression is to get enough sunlight. Two hours of early morning sunlight can help lift depression. If the sun’s not shining, at least spend some time outside.

Fresh air and breathing exercises are both good in aiding relaxation and promoting plenty of oxygen for your body. Here are some other natural ideas to relieve depression.

  • Drugs, caffeine, black tea, alcohol, cigarettes, and some contraceptives induce depression. Paint solvents or any toxic chemicals are also capable of producing symptoms of depression. If you can, limit the amount of exposure you have.

  • If you want to get out of a funk, cut out junk! Instead, fill up with plenty of raw foods that nourish your cells. Eat wheat germ or honey, which are natural energizers. Pears, apples, and nuts contain bromine which assists the nervous system in proper functioning.

    Licorice is also a great mood-elevating food. At least eight licorice compounds are MAO inhibitors, which are compounds capable of potent antidepressant action. Just be sure not to exceed ingesting it more than three times a day. It can have adverse effects in amounts greater than that.

    If for some reason you can't handle licorice candy, try the herb called 'savory'. It's totally great in dishes and tastes just like licorice!

  • Research has also shown definite links between low levels of omega fatty acids in the brain and depression and/or other psychiatric problems, such as Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia. If you think your levels are low, get some in your body!

  • Depression for prolonged periods of time can be very serious. The latest studies show that depression can be affected seriously by seasonal allergies. If you suffer from allergies and don't know why you're feeling low, try taking a decongestant or antihistamine for your symptoms. However, if you are seriously depressed, seek help!   • Set realistic goals and make a list of your top priorities. All the other things will have to wait! If you're feeling overwhelmed by life, now is not the time to take on extra stuff.

  • Have ethics and morals set high. If you have a gambling problem or other addictive-type traits, remember your ethics and morals. The higher you set your standards, the less you will be able to feel guiltless about risky behaviors. The more guilt you feel, the less likely you will repeat the behavior.

  • Just because you are feeling low, doesn't give you an excuse to bring everyone else down around you. Learn to discuss your feelings with others around you, so they are more considerate of your feelings. A little conversation goes a long way! Talking about your feelings is a great way to relieve depression!

  • Adopt an animal if you have the finances to do so. Animals have a way of calming nerves and raising hopes. Ten minutes of petting an animal can elevate neurotransmitters that make you feel good!

  • There are a hundred support groups in every county, in every state, in every nation, just about. Find one that you like and go to them. Just hearing other people talking about their problems can help you get a better perspective of your own problems!

  • If you don't have an extracurricular interest, find one. Put puzzles together, learn quilting, sew a new dress, go shopping (if you can afford it), or learn a new language! All of these hobbies are productive. The more productive you are, the better you'll feel about yourself. In fact, when you can relieve depression naturally, you're likely to feel better about things sooner!

  • If you sit around watching the news, the stock market, or soap operas all day long, you are bound to get depressed! Turn off the TV and get creative.

  • Crying is a good way to get negative feelings out of you! Everyone needs to release their emotions. Certainly crying is a way of coping and a great way to relieve depression. If crying is something you do more of the time than not, it may be time to seek help from a professional who can help you sort out your negative feelings.

  • A great way to relieve depression is to watch a funny movie! Comedy is therapy for many people as laughing helps release those feel good neurotransmitters in your brain!
  • To relieve depression, you'll need to remember NOT to take life too seriously. Life can be a comedy in motion if you look at it in a different light. Learn to appreciate all of life's ups and downs. Everything that happens to you, good or bad, created the person you are today. Kick depression in the butt and get back on track with new life experiences!
