Red lipstick looks great on every woman! You love them! You wear them! Or do they wear you? One common mistake some women make is that they wear the wrong shade of red for them. Not all reds are created equal! On the other hand, the biggest complaint women have about red lipstick, is that its very noticeable when it bleeds. Not so good either!
Reds can set the night on fire, with hot, romantic notes. If you wear the wrong color though, you can chill the air and turn the night into ice. There is little worse than seeing the wrong red lip color on someone. How unsavvy! Ever seen this before? Some red lipstick colors just don’t look 'right' on you!

To top that off, the list of red colors goes on and on. There is orange red, blue red, brown red, bright red, matte red, true red, fire red, earth red, shimmering red, alluring red, fuchsia red, mauve red, purple red, etc.
So how do you determine which one red lipstick looks best on you? We’ve all borrowed our girlfriends red lipstick that looks great on her. But when you try it on...Eewwwww! It just doesn't look right. But why?
Chemistry Baby!
Its because everyone has their own body chemistry, pigment, and skin tone. Think about mood rings and mood lipsticks. They act differently on everyone because we all have our own chemical composition. We all have different body temperatures too. Those things make a big difference! And all of these things determine what will look best on you!
Part beauty, part science!
Tone Too!
Wearing the right shade for your skin tone is critical when choosing a red lipstick color –
Rule of Thumb
A blue-based red is flattering with most all complexions, but do exceptionally well on fair skin or skin with a cooler undertone.
Blue toned reds can make teeth look whiter and skin more luminous.
For rosy skin, aim for a red color that has violet or fuchsia in it.
For olive or darker skin, orange, golden, or brown reds work best, although on very dark skin a cool blue fuchsia-red can look beautiful too.
Medium Skin tones - Clinique Long Last Soft Shine Lipstick in Red Red Red, or Estee Lauder Pure Colour Long Lasting Lipstick in Red Attitude.
Olive or Darker Skin tones - Lancôme Rouge Absolut Crème in Merlot, or Maybelline Moisture Extreme Lipstick in Crushed Cranberry.
There is orange red, blue red, brown red, bright red, matte red, true red, fire red, earth red, shimmering red, fuchsia red, alluring red, mauve red, purple red, and so many more!
More Lipstick Tidbits
Brown based lipsticks look great on most everyone too!
To make lips look fuller, wear a lighter color lipstick. Apply gloss on top of it to make lips look even more plump! If you want full lips but want to wear a darker color, then just apply a small dot of lighter liquid lipstick in the center of both the bottom and top lips. This really makes lips stand out!
To make lips look smaller, wear a darker matte color without the gloss.
For bleeding lipsticks -
* When you apply makeup, you should always apply lipstick to your lips as the last step. Apply a coat of chapstick to your lips before you start your other makeup. All chapsticks are wax based, so when you get ready to apply your lip color, the chapstick has ‘set’ into the lips a bit. Apply a small amount of loose powder over the chapstick. Then apply your lipstick. The lipstick stays on top of the wax coat and won’t run as easily.
* Using foundation on the lips helps hold colors in place. Bleeding red lipstick is the worse!
- The other thing you can do is this: Line lips with a neutral wax based lipliner. You can find them at most any superstore or on the net. Line the lips and then fill in the lip color. The wax based liner keeps the color in place!
If you get nervous when you apply lip colors, do this - Apply lipstick with your fingertip by patting it on in the center of the lip and working outward to create a stained look. This makes any color look like its your natural lip color, which is a very natural look!
For more intensity, choose a lip liner that either matches your lip color or is a shade darker than your natural lip color. After tracing the lip line, smudge the line inward with a Q-tip or your fingertip to make it less rigid. Apply lip color with a lip brush, sweeping on just enough to lay a foundation of color.
Blot lips with a tissue and apply a second coat. This gives lips dimension and makes lip color last.
Finish the look with a dab of pearl highlighter in both the center of the bottom lip, or just below the bow of the upper lip, which accentuates the mouth.
So, which red lipstick do you choose? The best advice is to find colors that blend well with your skin tone and bring out the sexy hot mamma in you!
