Razored Choppy Layers

by Leah
(MA)

Alright...
so...
Here it goes:
My name is Leah and I'm the type of person that has anxiety attacks when my hair is shorter than just above my breasts (due to a VERY traumatizing haircut at the age of seven in which I was forced to look like a Tranny...and I'm a very feminine girl).
So, for the past year or so, I have had my hair below my breasts (getting it trimmed occasionally and layered every so often but never letting scissors go haywire on my entire head of hair).
Just today, I felt very brave and decided to go to a recommended salon in just one town over and get a haircut that resembled the lead singer of a band called Hey Monday.
The girl in the band has choppy layers and hair that sits on her shoulders, very razored.
So, when asked the length I would like, I responded with "just above my chest."
But no...
She had to match the length with the photo while leaving the rest of my hair on its own little island.
My hair was 'volumized' (in other words, she FROOFED it up) and f*cked up my bangs to look nothing better than bangs from 20 years ago. Needless to say, the only way to describe my hair was...fluffy.
It was the most frightening moment of my life when I was spun around in the chair expecting to turn around to see edgy, beautiful hair and opening my nervous eyes to the fluff on my stuffed animals bodies -.-
I wanted to burst in tears (God-forbid I hurt the poor woman's feelings for ruining my only good feature) but I decided to thank her politely and claim I adored it.
I'm a pushover...
no lie.
So, I get home, flatten it out with my straightener, fix my part so that I ACTUALLY have serious bangs and mess around with it to make it look a bit better.
I still HATE the fact that my hair itches my shoulders every time there is a breeze and even my BEST FRIEND/COUSIN was EXTREMELY shocked by the length (her never seeing my hair any shorter than the middle of my back).
But, I just kept reminding myself that it could be MUCH worse and that I need to keep my head high and maintain some level of confidence.
Because, even when my hair looks like someone puked up liver...I always have someone who'll support me. Even when it is just my mother telling me I'm special no matter what. Haha.
And my hair grows back quickly, so I'm lucky.
But, the point of sharing my story is to have other people realize that...it could be worse. A LOT worse.
And that no matter what position you're in, there will always be some way to put a smile on your face.
:]
Now...
let's see how far I can walk into my school before getting tackled about the length of my hair...
but that's for another day.

Gosh Leah, I am sooo sorry you had such a bad time there gal! I think most women have been 'in the chair' and been surprised when they saw the results of their hairdresser. I get bashed by Cosmetologist all the time for teaching women how to do their own hair in my hair videos! If they would read some of the many comments I've gotten on this page about hairdresser mishaps, they might realize my ploy!

Many years ago before I was a hairdresser, I had my hair cut and styled by a lady at a nearby salon in Durham, NC. (where I grew up) The cut wasn't so bad, but she curled my hair so it was fluffed out like you describe. It looked hideous. I left the salon, put on a hat, and went home and washed my hair. I just couldn't stand it!!

It is very easy for a hairdresser to take advantage of you. After working many years in a crowded Salon, I've seen what can happen. I mean, you get all relaxed and trust the person with the scissors!

Of course, there are really good hairdressers out there! One thing I preach all the time is to "know thy hairdresser', but even the best hairdressers have bad days sometimes! It just happens!

I sure hope your hair grows back out soon! Oh, and be sure to take biotin supplements to help with your hair growth! They rock!
