Can Raspberry Ketone Supplements Help Burn Body Fat?

Raspberry ketone supplements may just be the hottest weight loss product to fly off store shelves this decade. Since Dr. Oz endorsed them, consumers can't seem to get the products fast enough! So the question begs, can these ketones actually help your body burn more fat?

One thing that makes the supplements so darn appealing is the fact that ketones are considered to be wholesome and natural. The term ‘ketone’ also has a powerful association with the Atkins Diet, which forces the body to burn fat as fuel and energy by producing ketones.

What are Raspberry Ketones?

Raspberry ketones are the aromatic compounds found in red raspberries that give the fruit its yummy aroma. Ketones are universal in nature. In technical terms, the formation of organic compounds in photosynthesis occurs by means of the ketone ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate. Many sugars are ketones, collectively known as ketoses. The most well known ketose is fructose, which exists as a cyclic hemiketal. Fatty acid synthesis occurs by utilizing ketones, which assist the release of energy from sugars and carbohydrates.

In other words, ketones help your body burn off fat as fuel.

How Can Ketones Help You Lose Weight?

Ketones help regulate adiponectin, a protein used by the body to regulate metabolism. Adiponectin causes the fat within your cells to break down more efficiently, which assists fat burning.

What is the Correct Dosage?

The recommended dose is 100 milligrams per day with food. To get the equivalent amount per serving in fruit, you'd have to consume 90 pounds of raspberries. It's a no-brainer to just take raspberry ketone supplements instead.

Clinical Studies on Raspberry Ketones

Clinical studies done in test tubes and rats/mice, have shown that high doses of the compound seem to increase lipolysis (fat burning) and aid in weight loss, which in turn helps prevent weight gain.

According to research, raspberry ketones stimulate the release of the hormone norepinephrine. This powerful brain-signaling hormone, tells your body to burn fat as energy. The breakdown of fat cells helps your body produce fatty acids that the liver converts into ketones. In a control group, researchers observed that ketones decreased visceral adipose (belly fat) found in the tissues of mice. It also significantly increased norepinephrine-induced lipolysis (the breakdown of fat) in (some of the) fat cells in rats.

A recent 2012 study from China found that raspberry ketones had several other health benefits, which included improved insulin sensitivity and decreased fat in the liver. The study was done in rats that were fed a high-fat diet. These results compare to earlier studies of resveratrol, a plant compound that first showed heart-healthy benefits in laboratory animals before it was marketed in supplemental form. Later studies however, confirmed these findings.

At this time however, there haven’t been any studies done in humans. It’s also good to note that although ketones may seem harmless, the supplemental versions of the compound are highly concentrated. Therefore, possible side effects and contraindications at this time are unknown.

Because increased norepinephrine is associated with increased heart rate and blood pressure, many folks are questioning whether raspberry ketone supplements are safe for heart patients. Of course, manufacturers are playing down possible side effects, suggesting that raspberry ketones are among dietary ingredients that the FDA considers safe for human consumption.

Other Benefits of Raspberry Ketones

Aside from fat burning, these powerful compounds may also help work miracles on hair and skin. In a 2008 study by Japanese researchers, raspberry ketones were applied to the scalp of a small group of bald men. Over half the men in the study grew hair back.

In another study, topical ketones were applied to the facial skin in a group of five women. After two weeks, skin elasticity improved in the cheeks of those women.

Raspberry ketones, which are chemically similar to capsaicin, (the thermogenic compound found in chile peppers) may be especially helpful in reducing a fatty liver. Aside from weight loss, taking raspberry ketone supplements may also lower cholesterol.

    Recently, I was visiting my best friend, who also happens to be a Nurses’ Practitioner. She told me about using ketones to diminish belly fat and gave me my first bottle of raspberry ketone supplements. I’ve only been using them for a few days so there’s no way to judge the results just yet but I feel great! No side effects so far! If a Nurses' Practitioner is taking them and thinks they are safe to use, that's good enough for me!

    So far, research has shown that raspberry ketone supplements may help you shed some weight. However, in order for any product to work effectively, you must take responsibility for the foods you consume and increase physical activity. Just taking a pill isn’t going to solve your weight loss woes. Raspberry ketone supplements should be used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle that consists of regular exercise and a well-balanced diet.

    *Note: Any food product you find that lists raspberry flavoring or artificial raspberry color (like in pastries and donuts) is not likely from the fruit of the raspberry. Instead, its like eating bugs as food!

    • 2 ounces gin
    • 1 ounce lemon juice
    • 3/4 ounce Crème de Framboise
    • 1/2 ounce simple syrup or 1 teaspoon superfine sugar
    • 3 ounces raspberry puree
    • 3 ounces chilled club soda
    • raspberries for garnish


    Pour the gin, lemon juice, crème de framboise, raspberry puree, and simple syrup into and ice-filled Collins glass. Top with club soda and stir gently. Garnish with raspberries. Enjoy!
