8 Ways Processed Foods Make You Fat

Processed foods are a mockery to our entire food system. There is ZERO healthy about them and they should never have been labeled as “edible” in the first place! These egregious replica's should be avoided at all costs! This is especially true if you’re trying to reduce your overall weight!

What are Processed Foods?

The word "processed" is repulsive when you’re trying to provide energy (nutrition) for your temple (body). Foods that have been processed are highly compromised and resemble nothing like the original food! These types of foods are often found in a box, bag, jar, or container, have been chemically altered, are made from highly refined ingredients, and often contain artificial additives for flavor. This is NOT real food!

Once you depend on them for your meals, you are setting your body up for failure. I should know! I used to rely on such products as Hamburger Helper and canned spaghetti products when I was just too tired to cook! Thankfully, I removed them from my diet years ago and when I try and eat them now, I spit the stuff out! Yuck! I often wonder how I could have ever been fooled for so many years!

If you want to lose the weight and restore proper balance to the body, please stop! Stop making excuses not to cook a meal! Stop relying on chemicals to do the job of mother nature! Stop the Standard American Food diet!

According to the Business Insider: "When we replace real, traditional foods like butter, meat and vegetables with crappy, processed junk foods, we get fat and sick. Real food is the key to good health, processed food is not. Period."

Dr. Mercola takes that one step further by saying:

“Furthermore, by cutting out these high-glycemic processed foods you can retrain your body to burn fat instead of sugar, a key component of health and weight loss. However, it's important to replace these foods with healthy fats, not protein—a fact that's often not addressed.”

8 Ways Processed Foods Makes You Fat

  • Sugar is the backbone of the western diet and has been linked to obesity for decades now. Fructose (a syrup made from GMO sugar beets or corn), can be found in just about every product on the store shelves and “programs” your body to store fat by consuming more calories.

    All fructose gets metabolized into FAT by your liver and can damage your liver in virtually the same way alcohol does. The more fructose you consume, the more it stores in your fat cells – leading to obesity-related diseases such as diabetes. This is especially true if you are insulin or leptin resistant.

    It only goes to reason that the more highly refined a product is, the more fructose it will contain.

    The AHA (America Heart Association) recommends keeping sugar to less than 38 grams/day. The irony is that 12 ounces of Coca Cola contains 39 grams of sugar!

  • Artificially made “trans fats” are most commonly found in foods that list “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil”. Typical foods that contain them are chips, crackers, baked goods and fried foods. Trans fats promote inflammation of the body and contain high amounts of omega 6 fats, which are not beneficial.

    Furthermore, most of these types of products polyunsaturated fats (PUFA’s), which stimulate inflammation, are chemically unstable, and prone to oxidation. Consuming too many oxidized fats have been linked to all sorts of health problems as well!

  • The functioning systems in your body know more than you could ever imagine including how much you should eat and how much energy you should burn. Then along came BIG FOOD – who figured out how to override and fool these intrinsic regulators! Processed foods are intentionally constructed to make you overeat by a process called “hyper-rewarding”.

    “According to the "food reward hypothesis of obesity," processed foods stimulate such a strong reward response in our brains that it becomes very easy to overeat. One of the guiding principles for the processed food industry is known as "sensory-specific satiety."

    “Investigative reporter Michael Moss describes this as "the tendency for big, distinct flavors to overwhelm your brain."2 The greatest successes, whether beverages or foods, owe their "craveability" to complex formulas that pique your taste buds just enough, without overwhelming them, thereby overriding your brain's inclination to say "enough."

  • If you’re trying to get more nutrition for your buck, do not depend on highly processed foods because they do quite the opposite. Most are devoid of actual nutrients but do contain synthetic vitamins and minerals which do NOT serve your body well.

    There are NO actual ways a lab can replicate what Mother Nature does best! Synthetic anything does not trick your body and will not provide you with whole synergistic nutrition that whole foods provide with trace minerals and phytochemicals!

  • Too many processed foods have artificial ingredients such as colors, flavors, preservatives, and texturants (chemicals that enhance a foods texture). Of course, BIG FOOD will tell you that these additives are quite safe but all the research points to no fricking way!

    Preservatives like BHA, BHT, and TBHQ can alter the neurological function of the brain by influencing behavior. These are the most lethal artificial ingredients in my opinion. Look at the food ingredients you buy and avoid these like all get out!

  • Refined carbohydrates are quickly broken down into sugars in your body which increases leptin and insulin levels artificially which causes weight gain.

    As reported by the Business Insider:

    "One of the main problems is that refined, 'simple' carbohydrates are quickly broken down in the digestive tract, leading to rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels. This can lead to carb cravings a few hours later when blood sugar levels go down again. This phenomenon is also called the 'blood sugar roller coaster' – which many people who have been on a high-carb diet can relate to. Not surprisingly, eating a lot of refined carbohydrates is associated with negative health effects and many chronic diseases.

    Do NOT be fooled by labels like 'whole grains' that are often plastered on processed food packages, including breakfast cereals. These are usually whole grains that have been pulverized into very fine flour and are just as harmful as their refined counterparts."

  • Everyone needs some fiber in their diet. It helps to move digestion along! However, typically refined carbohydrates are bleached and stripped of their hulls which is the part of the grain that contains the fiber!

    Research has shown that the more fiber you consume, the higher the BMI (basal metabolite index) and lower instances of developing hemorrhoids or colon cancer.

  • The absolute worst part of consuming cheap replications of actual foods, is that they’re highly addicting. Once you make them part of your daily life, they are incredibly hard to quit! I battle this all the time with my disabled son, who sneaks this type of food when he can get his hands on it! Sugar is highly addicting, which is exactly WHY it can be found in so many food products. Even complex carbohydrates are eventually broken down into sugars so they’re a real concern as well.

    Moderating your consumption of foods that are processed can go a long way to breaking old habits. Switching to an organic foods diet can go a long way to help curb your cravings for junk. Consuming more of the good stuff (produce that are packed in vitamins) will help supply many of the micro nutrients your body needs!

    Giving in occasionally does not set you up for weight gain or other health problems. However, constantly consuming junk foods sets you up for problems you’d probably rather not have! It is imperative that you break the chains that bond you if you want to get rid of those extra pounds that weigh you down!
