Poofy Curly Hair
by Hannah
(West Sussex)
My hair is long, past shoulder length but still above my waist. Its thick and all the layers I had are nearly all grown out. My hair is also naturally curly but always looks poofy, which doesn’t look good. It doesn’t look good straight and I always think I look ugly. Its really depressing! I have searched online for hairstyles that suit my oval face but I really need advice. Should I get more layers? Will this thin it out? How about a really short haircut? Please help! XX

You really don't need to do anything drastic, unless you want to sweetheart. Your hair cuticles aren't laying down properly, that's all.
Curly hair adds volume to your hair. Sometimes, (especially with high humidity) it has no choice but to frizz out. My hair is also long and thick and curly. If left alone, it poofs out and looks unsightly. Here are a few tricks to try!
Use
leave in conditioners to help tame your hair. These add a layer on top of your cuticle, which helps smooth your hair. Use
smoothing shampoos and
smoothing onditioners, which help lay down your hair cuticle and depoof thick, curly hair.
Biosilk is one product to try but there are a lot of other good brands on the market.
One of my favorite products to use are
finishing cremes.
Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff by Bed Head, works well for all hair colors.
You can also use your body lotion (any kind but preferably one with
Vitamin E in it) in a pinch to help smooth out your hair.
If you only want a few layers in your hair to put them back, you can easily do it yourself. Its a quick three step process to add
long layers to your own hair. Adding just a few layers is well worth your time, but adding too many can add a lot more volume. For this reason, stick to minimal layers only.
(I'll be adding another easy long layered haircut video today if you want to look at
this site's blog later on. You can also cut your own
V shaped layered haircut too!)
If you truly want a new hairstyle, you can see what hairstyles work for your own
face shape at
TheHairStyler.com. You have the ability to upload your own pictures and preview haircuts before you try them. You can also use the
free hairstlyes demo tool on this site for more ideas.
If you have the money and know an experienced hairdresser you can trust, he/she can also thin your hair with thinning shears professionally.
