Organic Maca Root Supplement for Your Sexual Health
Organic Maca root has been used for thousands of years by the natives in Peru. It has both food and medicinal purposes and is a cruciferous vegetable, much like cabbage, brussel sprouts, kale, collards, and broccoli.
Taken as a supplement, it is primarily used to enhance energy and as a sexual stimulant. Documentation from the 16th and 17th centuries suggested that Inca warriors used this root to increase vitality and strength.
The Maca plant thrives and grows in some of the highest elevations in the world, at over 15,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountain. In fact, it is one of the few plants that is able to sustain life and thrive in such high elevations. Maca is also called Peruvian Ginseng. It is served as a food but also has medicinal purposes.
Organic Maca root is well known as the superfood of the Andes. It works with the body's natural rhythms to rebuild weak immune systems, re-mineralize poorly nourished bodies, and increase energy and endurance. Each organic Maca root contains over 55 naturally occurring, beneficial phyto-chemicals! Most people feel their mood and energy levels lift quickly.
Maca contributes to overall well being. It nourishes and calms nerves, stimulates appetite, aids digestion, and supports the adrenal glands to fuel the body. The sterols, calcium, and Vitamin C help build muscle mass and the starches aid in physical endurance. The alkaloids found in the root help to assimilate these nutrients in your body.
Is an alternative to anabolic steroids, helps to build muscle.
Is non addictive.
When the Spaniards landed to Peru, they found Maca to be one of the most consumed and marketed products in region. They soon began mixing the supplement with their horse feed to make them more fertile. According to farmers in the Andes today, Maca is so potent that it leaves the soil in which it is planted, completely sterile.
Consistent with Andean tradition, it continues to be used for a variety of purposes. In addition to using it as an energy booster, it helps correct irregular menstruation, ease menopausal symptoms, and decrease insomnia. It has also been used to treat malnutrition or by those who are recovering from illness.
Organic Maca root is also a fertility aid and an aphrodisiac. In addition, it has properties that may make it effective in treating arthritis and respiratory problems, due to what shamans and herbalist consider its 'hot' qualities.
Men use it for impotence, erectile problems, and increased testosterone levels. Women use Maca Root as a HRT alternative, to help hot flashes, for peri-menopause, and to treat PMS associated problems. It will not cause ovary production to atrophy, (unlike HRT), as it stimulates the body to produce its own hormones, instead of supplying the body with synthetic hormones.
Sexual Enhancements of Maca Root
Organic Maca Root works so effectively for both men's and women's hormonal imbalances because instead of supplying plant hormones (like phytoestrogens), it stimulates the hypothalamus/pituitary gland. This naturally regulates hormones in both men and women and positively affects adrenal glands. Maca acts in a regulatory manner so whether your body is producing too much or too little of a particular hormone, consuming Maca will help balance them!
In a double blind study, men between the ages of 21 and 56 were given 3 grams of maca (or a placebo) for a period of 12 weeks. Men who received the maca root supplement reported increased sexual desire after about 8 weeks of treatment, even though the supplements did not appear to affect levels of testosterone levels, which is quite interesting indeed.
Studies done at the Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia were done with Maca gelatin. (500mg./per capsule). Levels of sexual desire on the test group increased by 180% (compared to the placebo group), and seminal volume also increased. (Wonder how they measured this one?) Sperm count doubled, and mobility improved. (Obviously, this study was done on men only.)

Organic Maca Supplements
Maca contains amino acids, minerals, sterols, fatty acids, vitamins, saponins, tannins, and carbohydrates. Maca root is a tuber root and is considered a starch.
Amino Acids - alanine, argine, aspartate (no relation to aspartame), glutamine, glycine, histidine, OH-proline, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, sarcosine, serine, threonine, tyrosine, and valine.
Protein - Between 11% - 14%.
Minerals - Calcium (10%), copper, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, silica, and traces of iodine, manganese, and sodium.
Sterols - Brassicasterol, erogosterol, ergostadienol, campesterol, sitosterol, and stigmasterol. (Plant sterols are part of the cell membrane and they are also used as the starting material in the production of steroidal drugs. They may inhibit tumour growth and regulate blood cholesterol).
Maca root is not a stimulant. It does not contain caffeine so it doesn't affect the central nervous system. Maca is a food, so is classed as a nutritional supplement in the same manner as spirulina, wheat grass, and green barley, as opposed to synthetic vitamin sources.
Lepidium peruvianum and Lepidium meyenii refer to the species and genus of the plant.
When you purchase Maca Root, check to see if it was grown organically, (without the use of pesticides), and find out where it was grown in Peru. Some of the farming areas in the Andes are affected by contaminated water from nearby mines in the country, so you might end up with Maca with mercury or lead contamination. Maca Root should not be diluted with any fillers either. Some Maca is also irradiated, so be sure what you buy has been standardized. Irradiation is a process that kills bacteria, but there is some controversy over its impact on humans. Select a reputable brand when you buy supplements.
If you're very concerned about the possible presence of bacteria, a good alternative is gelatinized MACA Root. It's a process that removes starch from the Maca Root, and breaks down the chemical bonds that connect the starch to the protein and other components. The body would normally do this in its digestive process. Gelatinized maca is more bio-available, as the gelatin is soluble in liquids and is more concentrated.
There are some gelatinized products on the market that are not the real thing, so buyer beware. They are roasted to achieve a darker colour. The main source of real gelatinized maca root is the National University of Agriculture at La Molina, Peru and product labels should verify it!
