There is a lot of good information around about Olive Oil. However, one thing they all fail to mention is that you will not get the numerous benefits from using it unless the outside packaging says:
'Cold Pressed' or 'Hard Cold Pressed' or 'First Cold Pressed'.It could be listed all of these ways. This is usually hard to see on the label so you will need to look for it~ The information is usually located on the top right hand side of the label or off to the side of the main label somewhere. (As seen in the picture below.)
If you can’t find any of these words on the bottle’s label, then it’s not the real thing! Lite Extra Virgin Olive Oils are most often not cold pressed unless you buy them from a Health Food Store! And even then, you still have to read the labels.
I have read a lot of 'Health and Beauty Newsletters' and it still amazes me to read that they are urging you to use Lite Virgin Olive Oils but not talking about 'Cold Pressed'.
I love, love, love Rachael Ray so I looked on her website to see if they had an overview of it, since she uses it all the time. (Or as she calls it, 'O' 'O'.) The website developers gave a good description of it. But they didn’t mention anything about looking on the label to find the information you need to know BEFORE you buy.
If you shop at economy stores like Walmart and Target, like I do, then you know how important it is to be able to stretch your money. I simply can’t afford to buy my Oils at expensive Health Food Stores, especially with a growing teenager in the house.
Filippo Berio will cost you around $10 for a 34 Fl. oz. bottle of at Walmart. The price has definitely gone UP but the lesser value brands won't be Cold Pressed. For normal cooking, one bottle should last about 2 months, so it’s still really a good buy. You just gotta be willing to 'pay it forward'.
Filippo Berio changed my mind about Olive Oils. I love their brand. If you've tried it and don't like it, try this brand. It will change your mind too. It's simply delicious to use in everything you cook and is so much more healthy for you. The health benefits are tremendous and you'll be doing yourself a favor by incorporating it in your daily meals!
Although we are having to shell out more money now, for the same products that used to cost much less, it is vitally important to get the 'real thing'. Olive Oil’s that are not labeled 'Cold Pressed' are produced in giant vats at processing plants that use preservatives and do not involve a natural cold pressing process. Unless the label says it’s cold pressed, its not.
If you are not using Cold Pressed, you are not getting many benefits from using it! I've read that Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been cold pressed. That is just not true. Otherwise, why would they label some bottles of it and not others?
Olive oil is a great source of Vitamin E if you include it in your diet with consistency! Vitamin E helps sustain and improve the integrity of the skin and is essential! It also helps to lower the LDL cholesterol, which is the bad stuff.
Cold Pressing is a very slow and natural way Oil is cured. It keeps the essential and beneficial elements of the oil in the oil itself. If you are not using 'Cold Pressed', then you are making a big mistake. It doesn’t cost much more to buy than the processed Olive Oil that you can buy in regular stores.
Use Extra Virgin Cold Pressed in your cooking. You can even use it for frying. You just have to use less of it, as it is a thicker oil than a 'Lite' version and therefore takes doesn’t deep fry very well.
It's also a good overnight moisturizer to use in your hair. It keeps the frizzie's away and helps restore moisture to your hair. You will need to wash it out in the morning. It has moisturizing qualities that work well on the skin too, so use it on your hair and skin.
