Oily or Dry Scalp?

by Jennifer
(UK)

Hi, I thought I was suffering from an oily scalp/oily hair (come the end of the day, the nape of my neck is excessively oily). However, I have now read that all this oil may be due to a dry scalp? However, I do not experience dandruff or any itchiness.

Is it possible to have a dry scalp without encountering the obvious symptoms?

At the moment I am using shampoos designed for oily scalp/hair: I do also have to wash it everyday as my hair is quite fine. One last thing, I am noticing a few strands of hair come out when I wash it, but as I never brush it, is this the reason?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Jennifer

Since you haven't got an itchy scalp or any dandruff, I would suspect that it may be your hormones changing. You didn't state your age but if you are under 30 years of age, this may be the reason.

It may serve you well to use a talcum powder with cornmeal on your neck in the morning to help absorb the excess oils. A small sized box of Kleenex that will fit into your purse, will also help absorb excess oils.

Have you tried a shampoo for dry scalp? I should think it might make your hair oilier but it might be worth checking out.

As for losing your hair in the shower: Most people shed around 50-100 hairs a day. As long as you don't notice any hair loss, I wouldn't worry about this at all. Its quite normal.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things as far as shampooing everyday. That's one of the best ways to keep oil away, especially if you have baby fine hair.
