Oily Hair or Dry Scalp
by Yumerz
Well, I've always had problems with my hair. Every time I wash it, it looks good and healthy, but after a day or two, it becomes very oily and flat.
I was wondering if my scalp is dry (because I read on other sites that this might be the problem), or is my hair just oily and impossible? (If it helps with anything, I have shoulder-length hair.)
Or, are hormones the problem? (Because I'm a teen, so I thought that could be too.)
Also, I am using Garnier Fructis for hair that breaks easily (I have this problem too), and I rinse my hair with vinegar. I do this only sometimes because I heard is not really healthy to use it frequently.

Well, you are on the right track! It sounds like its your hormones hard at work. If you had a dry scalp, you'd know it. You'd see tiny flakes of dandruff-like skin on your clothes and/or your scalp would be dry and that would be visible. Your scalp would also feel tight and dry.
When I was a teenager, I also had fairly greasy and oily hair. The good news is that I grew out of it and hopefully, so will you:o)
You may not be happy about washing your hair every night, but you may have to for a while. You could try shampoos for oily hair but they may be drying to your scalp and create a problem.
You can also try dry shampoos. I used one when I was in High School and it worked well for days in between washing my hair.
Vinegar rinses are good for clarifying your hair if you use a lot of hair products like gels, mousse, waxes etc. You only need to use one about once a month though. They can strip your hair of the natural oils you need to moisturize it. If you're using rinses more often than you should, this might be a reason your hair is breaking off? (I hope you aren't using the vinegar straight, and that you're diluting it with water!) You can find the recipe for vinegar rinses on my hair remedies page.
Keeping your hair trimmed is a good idea to help breakage. You only need to trim your hair about once every couple of months but it is necessary to avoid problems with split ends. You might also think about doing a few protein treatments. Hask placenta is a great protein treatment that works fantastic and is inexpensive to buy. Protein helps build up your hair but you will also need to moisturize your hair regularly too.
Another tip to keep from getting greasy hair, is to only apply conditioners to the mid hair shaft and ends of your hair. Your roots do not need moisture since your sebaceous glands (that produce oil) are located in your scalp.
Always remember to use a wide toothed comb on wet hair and a brush on dry hair. This helps avoid hair breakage too.
You might also try clarifying shampoos like Jojoba oil shampoos or Tea Tree oil shampoos. These shampoos have clarifying action and are not as strong as vinegar rinses.
