Non GMO Foods Versus GMO Foods – Facts, Pros and Cons
Non GMO foods do not contain genetically modified organisms. These food products are mainly organic in nature and are considered to be far better for your health. Regardless what you've read or been told, there have been nonon-biased published studies done on the consumption of genetically modified foods to date. (This fact should raise a BIG RED FLAG for you!)
However, after reading this page I think you'll agree that there are far many more 'cons' than 'pros' for GMO's. In fact, I can't think of one single benefit for them, except for the manufacturer's who are making loads of money playing God. They love shoving them down our throats... whether we want them or not! Hopefully, if enough people complain about them, they'll stop using them!
Each year, billions of dollars are spent to modify and taint non GMO foods. Genetic modifying requires scientists to tamper with the very genetic DNA coding of crops or seeds. GMO’s are NOT what Mother Nature had in mind. In fact, it is estimated that the average American consumes more than 150 POUNDS of genetically tainted food every year and have been doing so since 1997. This despite the fact that independent scientist's agree that GE foods are horrible for your health and pollute the environment.
The bioengineering process transfers genes from one organism to another, such as taking particular genes from a plum and transferring it to a watermelon. Not only does this defile nature, but it may lead to numerous health problems.
Even when crops are grown as completely non GMO foods, there will always be the possibility of cross contamination if a GMO crop is grown nearby. (Pollen from one crop may be spread to another crop via the wind.) The only way to know for sure if foods are truly non GMO foods or not, is by testing the food after it’s come into fruition but before the food is introduced to the market.
It would be hard to track the long-term results of consuming GM foods due to the complexity of a living organism’s genetic structure. Another problem results when introducing genes from one food source to another food source. It is essentially impossible to predict the reaction because there are far too many variables.
What are GMO's?
GMO's (called genetically modified organisms) are organisms that have been genetically engineered (GE) using gene-splicing techniques. The science allows DNA from one type of species to be injected into another species, creating frankenfoods: combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and viral genes that would never naturally occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
THESE ARE TUMORS IN RATS THAT WERE FED A GMO DIET!
Are GMOs Safe for Human Consumption?
In a word, NO. Reason? No one knows for sure but common sense tells you that it’s far safer to consume non GMO foods than it is to consume what are commonly called 'frankenfoods'. If they were truly safe, then it only stands to reason that manufacturers would freely include labels on their GM products, but that’s not the case, at least in the US and Canada. In fact, over the past 20 years, Americans have been denied their right to know what’s in their food! Makes me so mad!
Countries That Label GMO's
In 50+ other countries around the world, including Mexico, Japan, Australia, and all European countries, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production or inclusion of GMO's. Why? Because they have not been proven safe for human consumption. However in the US, the FDA has approved commercial production of GMO's based on 1) studies conducted by the companies who created them (Monsanto) and 2) profits made from their sales. (Monsanto) If you’re concerned about your health, these facts about GMO’s are quite alarming!
Most people, according to polls, would like to know if the foods they’re consuming are GE or not! A 2008 poll found that 87 percent of consumers wanted GMO labeling. Furthermore, according to a more recent poll, 53 percent of consumers said they would not buy foods that had been genetically modified. The Non-GMO seal for verified non GMO foods will give the public an opportunity to make informed decisions about GMO consumption.
Opponents (The Grocery Association of America, Big Food, and the companies that make Roundup and other toxic pesticides, like Dow, Dupont, and Bayer) suggest that labeling would cost consumers more to buy food. This is just not the case. It would NOT make non GMO foods more expensive! Foods have to be labeled. That's a fact. Including a GMO label on a product would not increase it's price or value, except for to us. This is simply a scare tactic used to convince consumers to act like good sheeple and not have them labeled. In fact, labeling could very well create new jobs!
This may seem like a silly video but it's right on the money! It's a simple way to understand more about what GMO's do in your body!
How Common are GMO's?
According to the USDA, in 2009, 93 percent of soybeans, 93 percent of cottonseed, and 86 percent of corn grown in the U.S. were GMO's. It is estimated that over 90 percent of canola (rapeseed) is GMO! (Since mayonnaise is made primarily from canola oil, you can bet it's tainted too!) There are also commercially produced GM varieties of sugar-beet sugar, a few types of squash, (like crooked neck yellow squash and zucchini), and around 50 percent of Hawaiian grown Papayas. As a result, it is estimated that GMO's are now present in more than 80 percent of pre-packaged foods in U.S. and Canadian grocery stores.
As it stands now, federal law mandates that ‘organic food products’ be produced ‘promoting ecological sustainability, without toxic pesticides, insecticides, or genetically engineered ingredients’, which are not common in the conventional food chain.
Increasingly, organic products are forced to compete with products claiming to contain ‘natural ingredients’ or be ‘all natural’, since there are no restrictions for foods that are labeled as ‘natural’. More often than not, the ‘natural’ term is meaningless and used as a deceptive practice, promoted only by corporate greed.
Unlike organic labeling, there are no government agencies or certification groups to oversee products labeled as ‘natural’. The definition of the term ‘natural’ on processed food packages seems counterintuitive and does not ensure that the product contains natural ingredients.
There is GE contamination in almost every pre-packaged product you see in the grocery store in the US and Canada. Most of the time, even non GMO foods contain trace levels of GMO’s, often between .01 percent and 0.5 percent. What’s even worse is that testing for the presence of GMO’s is not considered conclusive. What IS important are the levels of GMO’s in the foods you buy and consume. Some ‘natural’ items tested by the Cornucopia Institute showed GMO contamination levels between 28 percent and 100 percent, which means the key ingredients in breakfast cereals for example, are most definitely genetically engineered by the manufacturer and not a result of cross contamination.
Any GMO testing is merely a ‘snapshot’ that can change at any given time. Non GMO foods today may contain GMO’s tomorrow due to supply line errors, cross-contamination, and supply source changes, for example. Conversely, foods that contain high levels of GMOs today may test lower later on or even for different batches of the same foods from the same manufacturer. Other times, manufacturers may get false reports from their suppliers. Some manufacturers regularly test for GMO's, while others do not. They simply don't test for GMO’s because they'd rather not know and they’d rather you NOT know.
Products may be enrolled in the Non-GMO Project but may still contain some amounts of GMO's before they are fully ‘Verified’ for compliance. The Non-GMO Project has two designations for products. The food products which are ‘enrolled’ simply means that the food is becoming GMO free but may not have achieved it yet. Products that meet far more stringent GE testing requirements are granted ‘Verified’ labeling by the Non-GMO Project.
GMO’s are very complicated to understand, however, it’s important to understand what you’re putting into your body. Long term effects of GMO’s are not known and it’s likely that they are BAD! Mother nature had a perfect plan that’s being toyed with, perverted, and changed by (MAD) scientists.
How to Avoid GMO Foods
One thing is certain. You need to get used to reading ingredients NOW, if you haven’t already. You are being slowly poisoned by the foods you consume! Even companies that were set up to protect consumers may have fallen prey to big profits. FDA screening is laughable. Their guidelines are set up to help the big guys (corporations/manufacturers) and more often than not, do not protect the little guys! (you and me)
Most GM products are made from what’s called The Big Four: soybeans, corn, cottonseed, and canola, which are regularly found in prepackaged or processed foods. They have also made their way into your vitamin supplements. It's a fact that ALL vitamin C today is made from GMO corn produced in China. Look for these key ingredients in the foods you buy. If the food is not verified as being non GMO foods or GMO-free, avoid them when and where you can.
Look For Products Labeled 100% Organic
- US and Canadian governments do not allow companies to label products 100 percent organic if they contain genetically modified foods. While it may be harder to find organic products, this is the easiest way to know if foods are non GMO foods.
Look For GMO-Free Labels
- Most companies know that consumers don’t want to consume foods that contain genetically modified organisms. GMO-Free labels (which can be found anywhere on a product) are a good indicator that foods are non GMO foods or have no GMO ingredients. However, it doesn’t mean the product is organic or free of other harmful preservatives or additives.
Always look at what you're buying and choose 100% organic products (always non GMO foods) when available. Don’t hesitate to call the company (number can be found on the back of most products) and ask whether or not they use genetically modified ingredients. If they admit that they do, demand they stop using them.
Most all of the soy and corn products manufactured in the United States are genetically modified. GM corn is used for animal feed, which is a problem because most people consume meat derived from the animals that ingest them. GMO’s are also used vastly in the production of high fructose corn syrup, which is also a real problem! High fructose corn syrup is in everything from baked goods to yogurt to frozen fruits. Finally, soybeans are used as a protein source for vegans and vegetarians alike.
Avoid foods that contain high fructose corn syrup and other corn and soy products that are not labeled ‘100% organic’. Organic foods are quite safe because of their stringent guidelines. They cannot contain any genetically modified organisms. However, companies can still market a product as containing ‘organic ingredients’ while using some GMO's in the ingredients. If the food in question is not labeled as being 100% organic, then it is likely to contain a mixture of non-organic and organic agricultural ingredients.
Manufacturers have an opportunity to distinguish themselves as GMO-free companies. The Non-GMO Project is a voluntary labeling initiative that inspects and tests the products of companies as proof that their products are truly non GMO foods.
Since corporations are not required to divulge whether or not they use GMOs, the best resources available will still only be able to tell you whether companies potentially use GMOs.
The Center for Food Safety has created a shopping guide and a list of companies and foods that are verified as non GMO foods and those that potentially use GMO's. Many of the non GMO foods companies are small companies you may never have heard of, however if you want your food to be GMO free, help support them by buying their products!
The biggest offenders of GM ingredients may be found in the cereals you buy. I stopped purchasing cereal’s a couple years ago because of this fact. It’s not that my son and I don’t love them, but I don’t trust any of them except for oatmeal. I don’t think that Dr. Harvey Kellogg had frankenfood cereals in mind when he created bran cereals to help improve digestion! In fact, he’s probably rolling over in his grave about right now!
Other than corn and soybeans, none of the ‘other grains’ sold in the US are GM. However, look for whole grains that contain 100 percent wheat pasta, rice, oats, quinoa, barley, and dried beans, as these are still quite safe to consume.
GMO’s in Produce
Very few fruits or vegetables found in US grocery stores are genetically modified. This is extremely good news because I had heard otherwise! Only small amounts of yellow squash, zucchini, and sweet corn are GM. The only commercially grown GM fruit is Hawaiin papaya’s, at around 50 percent.
You can use the labeling system to tell if your fruits are GM but for the most part, they aren’t. (Yet!)
Genetically Modified Labels: Begins with the number 8. This is often a 5 digit number.
Organic Labels: These fruit labels always contain 5 digits, and begins with the number 9.
Conventional Labels: Begins with the number 4 and are 4 digits.
The bottom line is clear: If you eat meat on a regular basis, you are indirectly consuming GMO's. Most of the produce that WE eat hasn't been affected but is it only a matter of time?
Prepackaged foods and processed foods were invented to save you time, however they are not the best choice for your health! They are by far the biggest culprit of GM ingredients, with the exception of cereals and cereal bars. They are far worse! Realistically, there's probably no way to totally eliminate GMO's from your diet, but if non GMO foods are the best health option, choose organic foods where and when you can!
Monsanto is by far, the biggest pusher of GM foods so beware of their products! This infuriates me and it should infuriate you too! Read more about the Millions Against Monsanto here.
This is a new study that was done in France and just released. Please read it. The only conclusion to draw is that GMO foods are BAD for your health, just as suspected!
The bottom line is this! Non GMO foods are what most middle aged folks (like me) were raised on. We didn't have to worry too much about what was in our foods cause it was pretty straight forward. Today, that's all changed. If you are young, you've been eating this crap since you were born and you need to do your homework.
Please join me (and thousands of others) and speak out against GM foods! It is your responsibility! IF you want anything to change!
