Natural Red Hair Turning Brown

by Puzzled

I am a natural redhead. My hair has always been more auburn than red. However, the older I get, the more brown looking it becomes. I hear comments all the time like: "What have you put on that pretty red hair?" or "Your hair sure isn't red like it used to be!"

I have never colored my hair. I am puzzled as to why my hair has changed. I am not on any medications, so that wouldn't be the cause. I want my pretty red hair back. What should I do to bring back the natural shade? Thanks Sincerely, Puzzled

Its probably built into your genetics and unfortunately, there's not anything you can do to change your DNA. There are also hormonal changes that take place as you get older, which can make your hair appear different.

You can however, think about using a semi permanent hair color, which won't damage your hair but will give you the beautiful red color you desire! No more rude remarks about your hair and you will restore your beautiful red hair.

You should also consider using hair color glazes, which act like a semi permanent color but also give your hair great shine. John Frieda Hair Glazes, Sebastian Cellophanes, and Redkin Shades EQ are three of the best brands to choose from.

If you don't want to color your hair, you'll have to get used to the comments. People with gray hair have the same decision to make: hair color or live with what you've got.

UGH!!! NEW
by: Cianna

I had the most gorgeous dark cherry color all my life... I also have turquoise blue eyes. Its a rare combo, and Im 100% Irish. There are a lot of things that my particular genetic make up means for me.... and all those with natural red hair and blue eyes. Like, we hyper metabolize substances. I thought I was just a freak of nature, until I was annoyed at not being able to get good effectiveness out of meds that I researched it (we are also the most common group to wake up during surgeries!) and turns out that its the genetics that gave me the red/blue combo also gave me this side effect.

My hair slowly started turning brown and I was pissed, LOL SO, I started dying it. In my 40s I resorted to dying it. I had a stylist for a long time and she also told me that I wasnt a natural red head, I told her she didnt know what she was talking about and that years of dying it, and genetics, medications, etc and its changed my hair color. Im betting if i were to try to bleach it out and strip the color I would still have the carrot orange color under all this brown. Im too old to worry about what people think or say. If they ask, Ill tell them.

I still have all the other genetic markers for being a natural red head. So there! LOL

Grieving loss NEW
by: Anonymous

I too had a beautiful Auburn my grandma called it (new copper penny color) and as I've gotten older I have a more (old dirty penny) color. I did grieve my light auburn color but feel lucky that at 52 y/o I only have a few gray hairs in my temple area. People do comment when they have not seen me in awhile. But when my hair was auburn people thought I dyed it until they would see my brother with the same color.

embrace your hair color, no matter what your age
by: carolyn

Because of the media, we're all programmed into thinking that we have to maintain everything (hair color, firm skin, youthful glow, hair volume, etc.) all the time. However, everyone changes as they age. Its inevitable.

If you don't like your brown hair, why not add some red lowlights to it? Or use a demi permanent color all over? If you don't like what you see, change it!

Red hair is associated with youthfulness.
by: Anonymous

I am a redhead whose hair was flaming red as a child but now that I'm in my early forties it's a redish-brown. For me, the change was so gradual I didn't really notice it. But for my family it was quite a surprise; they only saw me once a year or once every two years and so couldn't help but notice the difference.

I got so many comments over the past few years during my visits with them about my hair color that I decided to read up on the topic. What I found is that it is very common for redheads to go brown instead of or before going gray. It's just often the natural path for their hair color. Brunettes go gray, red heads go brown. Whatever!

I also read that since red heads do often go brown that red hair is associated with youthfulness. Sigh.. That really hurt!

There are many factors for this change in your hair color. It can be due to hormonal changes or your lifestyle. You can also move to other location for some months in order to check if this change in color is due to your environment.

My Grandfather's red hair
by: Anonymous

Definitely is got to do with genetics....; my grandfather was a typical "ginger" dude, but one of those rare ones with deep blue eyes and deep curly red hair combination...and my My dad, he told me once that he was born with a darker red hair than grandpa, but since I have memories his hair always looked dark brown to me almost black. Dad and Mom had 4 kids, mom has pitch black hair and brown eyes, but somehow my last two sister and brother, they are twins, my brother came with the deep red curly hair like "Archie", and with light green eyes; the rest of us are pitch black and brown eyes hair like my mother. Now my brother's red hair has turned into dark brown like dad's.

In my teens people passing by used to look at me twice since I developed a light brown reddish beard and my hair was deep pitch black....later on my early 30's people with look at me more, cause all that red hair on my beard abruptly turned snow white on me....and actually i was still fair young dude.
I got married, and even though my wife is blond with green eyes and Irish decedent, all our kids came with dark brown to black hair and brown eyes like me...only my little princess has a slightly reddish color when you see hair dark brown-black hair through the sun....

genetics...a real mystery...lol!

It's really sad to loose the
by: Anonymous

It's really sad to loose the hair which we have since child hood all of a sudden and get another color to the hair. This really makes us to get depressed. If people doesn't like to get the hair color i would suggest a henna which colors hair naturally.

My hair was orange when i was a kid, turned red as a teenager and is slowly getting darker as I near my thirties. My beard is also starting to pop up black hairs. I guess my genes are starting to conflict with each other?!

This is a remarkable, and at the same time a phenomenon that does not happen to people very often. Changing of color naturally is unique, so people admire it some do not. I am personally a big fan of red heads.

Natural Red Hair
by: Anonymous

Hi Redheads.. I'm a natural redhead too.
To keep your color natural w/o dyes...
Wash hair, towel dry lightly
use beet juice and carrot juice mixture into hair...sit in the sun for about 45 minutes.. till hair is dry...put on conditioner and rinse. Back to you naturally! :)

How it works
by: Genger

Your cells split every 7 years causing the cells to loose their potency at every split. This is also the reason our skin ages.

This is what causes wrinkles, hair color change, etc.

I was born with bright Orange hair, then red, now at 43 auburn with blonde/red highlights. Only a few white hairs on my chin.

My grandmother died at 92 and had a solid head of red hair with a little white around the sides of her face. If you have a good diet when the cells split they will maintain their potency. LOTS of water!

I wish I were a redhead again
by: Anonymous

Unlike most people my red hair turned to a light brown by the age of 4. Most people don't believe me when i say i was originally a red head. It sucks I wish i had my red hair again, but I'm still on the edge of dying it because people might just think I'm going for a trend rather than me going back to my original hair color.

What I've learned
by: Copperkat

After reading loads on the genetics of red hair, I have learned that our red gene can "turn off" as we age. This is the same case as when a person's eye color turns paler with age. There is no way to reverse this process. I have turned my research to locating a very gifted colorist and we have found that "perfect" red for me. If your identity is tied in to being a redhead as mine is...overcome your fear of hair color...dive in and experiment til you find your color and feel right in your "skin"!

I am in the same boat
by: Tiff

I am 35 & about 10 yrs ago my beautiful red hair started getting darker, now its dark arburn. I studied this in depth because I just want to cry every time I see old pics & my color is gone. I haven't ever put dye or harsh chemicals. When I read up on it I discovered that redheads have a certain gene to create the beautiful color. If that gene mutates then we wont ever get it back naturally. I've searched for my natural color in a bottle but I am still so afraid to dye my hair. I want it to look natural & fear I'm never going to get there.

Red Hair to Black, Why ?
by: Anonymous

Believe me ... my natural carrot colored red hair has turned black. I'm now 75 y/o and it started at 55 y/o. Can't find any reason for this ... have been searching for an answer for about 5 years. When I lighten my hair it turns to a light strawberry blond which lasts about 6-8 weeks and the roots start turning black.

Lightening auburn hair - hydrogen peroxide
by: Anonymous

Hey guys - I am a natural redhead who up until about age 20 had beautiful copper hair (I'm 28 now). It started getting darker, and now naturally would be a dark auburn/brown. People I met would never know I was a redhead. The proof was their incredulous reactions if and when I mentioned it. I didn't like my color, so I searched for ways to fix it.

I tried lemon juice in the summer. Like, a LOT. It gave me some nice highlights, but they faded.

I tried henna (Avigal - Copper) - I kept it in OVERNIGHT, and it made my hair slightly redder, but also darker = no win.

I tried a honey solution overnight. I saw slow results, with it lightening maybe a shade or two over 8 overnight trials (and honestly it's annoying and messy, and who wants to sleep that much with a towel on their head?)

I just tried hydrogen peroxide, and I couldn't be happier. I went through almost two bottles before I got the color I wanted. I think it helped that I had henna in before, so that when it lightened, the red came through better.

No haters, please: Obviously it's not good for your hair, it could mess up the color or worse, and you should be careful doing this. However, I just wanted to let people know it worked for me after I tried other more "natural" things.
