Multi-Tonal Blonde Hair Questions

I was wondering if you could answer my questions about dyeing my hair, as I can't decide whether to or not?
I have multi-tonal blonde hair that is probably half way between light and dark? Especially now there is no sun! It has all different blonde shades in it, from dark blonde to light blonde.
Anyway, I'm thinking of (and a lot of my friends have suggested that I) dye my hair a lighter shade of blonde, light but not quite platinum blonde!
However, I'm worried about a few things. First I read that you can't use semi-permanent dye to make it lighter, so with permanent dye how quickly will my roots show and will they be really noticeable?
Also, will I be able to get back and/or how could I get my original color back if I dye my hair for a while?
I also wash my hair everyday and sometimes the ends are quite dry so I use serum. Will this be a problem?
(This is probably really stupid but I've never dyed my hair before...)
I go swimming so is the chlorine going to be a problem. I don't want green or brittle hair or anything!
I'm thinking about not going to the hair dressers, just doing it myself. (well my friend would do it and she dyes her sister's hair often) Is this a good idea?
Oh, and is it really bad for your hair to dye it? I use straighteners/hot irons most days (obviously with heat defense spray).
Sorry if any of these are stupid but I like to take care of my hair! I'd really appreciate any advice as I'd really like my hair lighter but I'm worried!
Also, if I've really asked this in the wrong place could someone tell me where to ask?
Thanks!

Well, first off, let me say you've come to the right place to ask
hair questions! I need to address each answer though, so lets get started!
Your roots will show as soon as your new growth starts to grow in. Most people who color their hair, color their roots about every 4-6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. If your hair is dark blonde, and you color your hair light blonde, your roots shouldn't be hugely noticeable. It will just look like you were out in the sun and haven't been for a while. If your hair were dark brown however, and you colored it blonde, your roots would stand out like a sore thumb! Don't sweat the small stuff!
You won't ever be able to get your original color back but you could come close to it. You could color it back dark blonde and add some different shades of lighter blonde highlights to it, to get it close to its original shades.
Dry hair ends are a problem on any hair! Serums only mask the problem. You need to
deep condition your hair regularly to keep moisture in your hair. You might also try using
leave in conditioners on your hair too. Be sure to target your dry ends!
Swimming shouldn't be a problem. If you go really often though, you may want to use a bathing cap on your hair. Chlorine + sun will bleach your hair out if you stay out in the sun after swimming and don't rinse the chlorine out. This will also dry out your hair a lot so be sure to use
moisturizing conditioners after you shampoo everyday.
Its fine to allow your friend to color your hair, as long as she understands what products to use. She must use the right blonde color and the right volume of peroxide, for your hair to turn out the blonde hair color you have in mind!
Coloring your hair is probably the least abrasive type of chemical treatment, besides temporary or semi permanent hair colors.... if you use colors the right way. Do not color all of your hair (roots to ends) again once your roots start to grow in. (You can safely use a semi permanent color on all of your hair but not permanent!) Only color your roots and do not overlap colors.
Since your hair is already multi-tonal blonde colors, why not just add some light blonde
highlights to your hair instead of using a color? Your hair will lighten up a lot and you'll be out in the summer sun in no time, which will naturally bleach it a blonder color. You also wouldn't have to worry about coloring your roots everyday!
Coloring your hair at home has its perks and drawbacks. To ensure that you get the right colors though, you need to understand the laws of color and how they apply to hair color. Hair colors use different color bases. If you mix two different color bases, you can create some really bad hair disasters!
If you are using a hot iron on your hair everyday, its no wonder you have
dry hair ends. Even with
thermal hair protectors on your hair, the heat from the iron can penetrate the hair shaft and damage your hair. You can easily straighten your hair with your blow dryer instead. When your hair is almost dry/damp, comb it out straight and hold your hair dryer above your head. With the heat setting on high/hot, blow down on your hair while you gently brush it out.
Your hair should be straight enough to please you and you won't be damaging your hair everyday!
