Mercury Toxicity – A Major Contributor to Disease and Autoimmunity

Mercury toxicity is something that most of us don’t ever think about, but it should be. Most of the time, toxicity is associated with eating fish that contains mercury but that’s clearly not the only source you should be concerned about.

Mercury is down right deadly to your health. It can be ingested, inhaled, or even absorbed into the skin through a variety of methods; from medicines, injections, medical procedure's, and even some beauty products may contain it.

The problem is that when heavy metals enter your body, they are embedded to bones or soft tissues. Once positioned, they can cause irreversible damage to your genetic DNA.

Besides plutonium, the neuro-toxin mercury tops the list of the most deadliest metals to humans. One tiny drop of mercury (the size of a grain of sand) can contaminate a large swimming pool. Mercury toxicity and exposure has been associated with autism, autoimmunity, and many neurological disorders.

Mercury Exposure

Mercury is a highly toxic metal that occurs naturally in small amounts in the environment. Just as you assumed, mercury exposure cause's mercury toxicity.

Small amounts of mercury are regularly emitted into the air by human activities such as manufacturing or burning coal for fuel, and from natural sources such as volcanoes. When mercury falls in the form of rain or snow, it may enter lakes or streams and then settle into the soil.

Because mercury remains liquid at room temperature, it is used in many instruments that are still in use today; in thermometers, barometers, light switches, thermostats, blood pressure instruments, and other medical devices. Batteries that contain mercury are used in some small electronics and some small amounts of mercury can be found in energy saving light bulbs or fluorescent light bulbs. Mercury also is used in motion picture projection, outdoor lighting, and in some medications.

Mercury that is swallowed by accident (such as a child breaking a thermometer and ingesting some) is of low risk in comparison to the risk of breathing mercury vapors.

Other mercury exposures include some necklaces imported from Mexico or China that contain a mercury-laden glass. If the glass pendants are broken, metallic mercury is released into the environment.

Both wild and farm-raised fish can be contaminated with mercury today. When mercury is unleased into the oceans or streams, the bacteria that soils contain readily convert mercury to methylmercury, which is taken up by tiny aquatic plants and animals. Fish that eat these small organisms and can build up methylmercury in their bodies, just as you and I can. Bigger fish (that eat the smaller fish or algae’s) may contain the highest concentrations of methylmercury as time goes by.

As a result, fish are now a significant source of mercury toxicity. Since larger fish typically have higher concentrations, it’s suggested to avoid eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, and white albacore tuna. However, sole, tilapia, cod, salmon, pollock, and haddock are considered to be better alternatives though their intake should still be limited.

Mercury has been used in dental amalgam’s since the early 1800's. Dental amalgam is a silver filling that’s used to build up teeth that have cavities or it can be used to restore broken teeth. Amalgams contain 40-50 percent mercury, 25 percent silver and 25-35 percent a mixture of copper, zinc and tin. Thankfully, amalgam use has been on the decline because of a reduced incidence of dental decay and because improved substitute materials are now available. However, a lot of the damage they pose has already been done. There are literally millions of people in the world today walking around with amalgams in their mouths.

According to the FDA:

"Dental amalgams are considered medical devices and are regulated by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Since the 1990s, FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government agencies have reviewed the scientific literature looking for links between dental amalgams and health problems. CDC reported in 2001 that there is little evidence that the health of the vast majority of people with dental amalgam is compromised, nor that removing amalgam fillings has a beneficial effect on health."

Which is by the way, a direct LIE!

The American Dental Association (ADA) continues to publish that they are safe but they are NOT. More than 50 percent of the amalgams in humans today contain mercury. The materials themselves are shipped as 'hazardous waste' to your dentist's office and treated like hazardous waste when it's applied and even when it's removed. In fact, during mercury amalgam removal, it’s not uncommon for practitioners to wear HAZMAT suits. To ensure your safety, insist that your dentist only use non-metal based fillings.

Mercury Amalgam Facts

  • Mercury is the most toxic non-radioactive element on the earth.

  • A silver mercury amalgam filling normally contains 40 - 50 percent mercury.

  • On average, amalgam fillings weigh around 1 gram and each filling contains 1/2 gram of mercury.

  • The typical adult has 10 amalgam fillings containing 5 grams of mercury.

  • Half a gram of mercury in a 10-acre body of water would warrant issuance of a fish advisory.

    Another top source of mercury toxicity comes in the form of injected vaccines. Thimerosal, a mercury based vaccine preservative, is used in many childhood immunizations and flu vaccinations.

    Mercury is now recognized as a factor in the incidents of childhood autism and neurological disorders. This is just one of many reasons to avoid vaccinations, or at least carefully weigh the risks as opposed to the benefits. Some vaccinations are thimerosal-free, which should always be preferred.

    I originally had the FDA's list of drugs and cosmetics that contained mercury but it appears that the FDA has taken that page down. Wonder why?

    Note: - Bandaids are treated with mercury so when you put one on, you are giving mercury a direct line to blood vessels if the skin is broken. Many brands of toilet paper are also treated with mercury. Charmin is one brand that does NOT treat their TP with mercury.     Mercury Absorption

    Mercury exposure can occur by breathing vapors, by direct skin contact or by eating food or drinking water contaminated with mercury. Absorption of mercury from the area under your tongue and the insides of your cheeks are absorbed the fastest. These areas are in close proximity to mercury fillings, which is certainly hazardous to your brain and overall health. Mercury can destroy adjacent tissues, travel to the lymphatic drainage system, and/or directly enter the blood stream. Once in the blood stream, it can travel to any cell in the body, where it can either disable or destroy the tissues. Mercury can also travel directly from the fillings into the lungs.

    Mercury Toxicity

    Methylmercury is the most dangerous form of mercury because it’s able to travel great distances and enter all cells in your body. After entering your body, methylmercury is converted into an ionic form, which disrupts internal structures that keep a cell healthy, active, and alive.

    Mercury toxicity is defined by its destruction and travel within your body. It may choose to destroy nerve tissue but all tissue’s and organs are at risk, especially the kidneys. Since mercury can cause damage to any tissue in the body, it’s difficult to prove actual ‘mercury toxicity’.

  • Mercury and Dental Health

    Three times now, amalgams have been accused of initiating diseases. The first time was in the 1830's, again in the 1920's, and then again in 1973 by Dr. Hal Huggins. He initiated a movement based on more substantial information to determine mercury toxicity. Until recently, it was always assumed that mercury stayed within the filling. Now it is known that mercury leaches out from amalgams every minute of every day. According to Hal Huggin's; "The average amalgam filling releases about 34 (plus-minus 2) micrograms of mercury daily."

    Unfortunately, mercury changes it's form. It may start out as inorganic in your body but can be converted to it’s organic form. Each form of mercury attacks a different aspect of the cell membrane, your genetic DNA, or your LIVE enzymes.

    Mercury atoms can attach to any cell in the body rendering it abnormal, and is also subject to destruction of the immune system. This condition is commonly referred to as 'autoimmunity' or ‘autoimmune disease’.
