The Benefits of Massage Therapy as We Age

There are many benefits of massage therapy that can help us as we age. Having been licensed in the field for many years, I can testify to its many advantages. It not only feels great to get one but it also helps our physiological and psychological existence. It helps give us a sense of overall well being and relaxation as well as makes us feel renewed and regenerated. There are few things better than getting a massage!

It is amazing to me the numbers of people who’ve never had one. If you have stiff or aching joints then you are truly missing out. If you have high stress levels and need a little respite, massage may be just what the doctor ordered! Massage is highly underrated and highly under-prescribed!

The first massage I got was a life changing experience. As you know Cosmetologists spend many hours on their feet, twisting and turning in all sorts of awkward positions. I had been working in a Salon for many years and my neck and shoulders were very stiff and sore. It had taken a toll on me. Many mornings when I got up I could not even turn my neck. That’s how stiff I had become. A fellow Cosmetologist recommended that I get a massage. I met with her massage therapist and scheduled my first visit.

The therapist worked on me for over an hour. In that hour she found many places on my body that had immense and intense muscle pain. When she manipulated those areas it almost felt as though the muscles were on fire. I found it very strange because although the manipulations hurt a lot, I realized that it was good pain.

In that hour my mind wandered. At times I almost felt like I was in a dream. I also had many visions of my beloved relatives who had passed away. I saw my grandma and my grandpa as well as my brother and sister. As she finished the massage, I felt something physically lift off my body. Then a flood of tears came. It took me about 30 minutes to get my composure back.

What in the world happened?

I certainly had no idea what had just happened. The therapist gently explained to me that our muscles hold memory. Some of the memories that I had trapped in my muscles were over 20 years old. The ‘lifting’ that I felt was the release of painful memories that were embedded deep in my muscle tissue. The pain that I had hidden so secretly in my muscles for so many years, was suddenly relieved. My body finally gave me permission to relax. I instantly became a believer and then sought to get licensed in the field. That’s how profound my first massage was for me.

Not everyone has as many painful memories as I had though. Our experiences will differ greatly from person to person. However, one thing is clear. Massage therapy does help! It’s one of the best presents you can ever give yourself.
