Best Makeup Beauty Tips that Draw Attention

Makeup beauty tips are essential when you’re making decisions about which makeup you should wear.

There are many hints and tricks that can help you out along the way in your makeup quests.

The amount of makeup you wear is always up to you, but there are days when just a little dab will do!

Natural makeup looks like you’re wearing no makeup at all. It's most appropriate during the day. Heavier makeup is better suited to night time, when lighting is dimmer. Wear it when you’re out and about having dinner and drinks, or sporting your favorite local watering hole. Use these makeup beauty tips to make your makeup decisions easier!

Makeup Beauty Tips

Foundation Makeup Beauty Tips

  • Thoroughly clean your face before you apply foundation. Use toners to remove dirt and oils on your skin. Follow with a good facial moisturizer before you apply makeup.

  • Allow lotions to thoroughly dry before you apply foundations. It’s best to let lotions dry at least 10 minutes.

  • Use a makeup primer if you have a hard time keeping your makeup in place. Eyeshadow primers like Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion are great for shadow application!

  • Test your foundation along your jaw line instead of the inside of your wrist. For best results, you should view it under natural light and try to match it to the natural skin tone on your neck.

  • If you use a sponge to apply your makeup, make sure it’s moist to create a flawless look. Always wash sponges with soap and warm water after use. Dry your sponge before using it again.

  • Mineral foundations take far less time to use, and can be used by all skin types.

  • Apply and blend liquid foundations with your fingertips for a more natural look. Your fingertips will warm the liquid, which always gives you a more sheer finish.

  • Open your mouth when applying foundation to expose your neck. This tip will help eliminate an obvious line at the jaw.

  • Keep two shades of foundation on hand. Mix them together to make your own blends or shades.

  • Throw away foundations that are more than a year old. These tend to go rancid and may make you break out in pimples.

    Eye Shadow Makeup Beauty Tips

  • Choose eye shadow colors that blend your natural skin tone. If you’re not sure which colors of makeup to choose, select colors found in the specs of the iris of your eyes. This follows the rules of your own color season. You can also successfully use the color of clothes that look good on you. Brown shadows for example, look great on most everyone.

  • Use shadow colors that are the same color as your eyes. Green shadows look good on green eyes, blue shadows look good on blue eyes, and brown shadows look good on brown or hazel eyes.

  • Use a trio of eyeshadows to compliment your eyes. Use a lighter base color all over your eyelid. Use a dark shadow color in the crease of your eyes, and use a light shadow color along your brow bone to highlight your eyes. If you have a hard time choosing, try makeup kits that have a wide variety of colors to choose from. That way you can set your makeup to your mood!

  • Line lower and upper lashes in bold colors for a quick eye pick up!

  • When you apply eye shadow to the crease of your eye, keep your eyes open and slightly tilt your head back. This will enable you to better see the crease which allows the shadow to go into it more uniformly.

  • If you have puffy eyes, don’t use frosted or shimmer eyeshadows or light/white colors. Instead, use soft matte colors.

  • Use peel off eyeshadows for a quick eyeshadow fix!

    Mascara Makeup Beauty Tips

  • If your mascara is new and there is a large deposit on the wand, gently tissue it off before applying to prevent clumping.

  • Twirl your mascara brush before using it for a full application. Don’t close and open your mascara unnecessarily, as this dries it out more quickly.

  • Try different colors of mascara to make your eyes pop. Available colors are blue, green, purple, and even pink! Try experimenting with different colors of mascara to create different looks. If you don't want to coat the entire length of your lashes in color, try using them on the tips of lashes only.

  • To accentuate your eyes, use one coat of glossy mascara on your lower lashes and several coats on your top lashes. Allow mascara to dry between coats to prevent clumping and smudging.

  • If your mascara thickens when it reaches the end of tube, place the tube in warm water. This will help thin the mascara that’s left in the bottle. Never add water to the tube, as this can cause bacteria to form.

  • Throw away mascara that’s more than a year old.

  • Apply mascara to the front and back of top lashes for longer, fuller lashes.

  • Tilt your head back slightly, pop your eyes open, and look down a bit when you apply mascara to upper lashes.

    Eyeliner Makeup Beauty Tips

  • Use white pencil liners to perk up your eyes, brighten your eyes, and make your eyes pop!

  • When using an eye pencil, open your mouth slightly to relax your eye muscles. It will make lining a lot easier without having to pull or tug at your lid, which can cause wrinkles.

  • Before lining your eyes, look ahead of where you want to draw your line. This helps you make more exact lines.

  • Use pencil liners on the inside rim of your eyes to add dimension to your eyes. You can apply it to both top and bottom rims, or just one or the other.

  • Black eyeliner (especially Kohl black liner) looks good with every eye color.

  • Use liquid liners along upper lashes only. Never apply them below lower lashes. If you sweat just a little bit, they will run and give you raccoon eyes.

  • Apply eyeliner as close as possible to your lashes. This avoids the white line you get sometimes when liner and lashes don’t meet.

  • Don’t wear heavy coats of eyeliner because it can make you look slutty sloppy.

    Eyebrow Makeup Beauty Tips

  • Always use an eyebrow color that matches your natural eyebrow color. The main objective is to define and fill in sparse eyebrows. Always comb your brows first, then use feather-like strokes with your pencil to fill them in. To make your brows look more natural, brush out brows after application.

  • Pluck your eyebrows regularly, as to not detract from your makeup and your face.

  • When you use a brow pencil, maintain a sharp edge and brush tiny strokes to fill in any gaps.

  • Use clear mascara on your brow lashes to hold brows in place.

  • Always brush eyebrows before you apply makeup. This helps shape your eyebrows and eliminates loose hairs that might fall into your eyes.

  • If your brows are low or close to your eyes, bleaching them a lighter color can 'open up' your face. This is a practice of the world's best makeup artists.

  • Never over-pluck your eyebrows. As you get older, eyebrow hair is slow to grow back, if at all.

    Lipstick Makeup Beauty Tips

  • If you are not fortunate enough to have full lips, wear light, shimmering, frosty lipsticks or lip glosses. These make your lips look full and lush.

  • To remove lipstick off your teeth, drag your tongue along your front teeth. You can also remove lipstick with a tissue or your toothbrush. Never put your fingers in your mouth to eliminate lipsticks unless you are sure your hands are clean!

  • Use lip balm’s or moisturizers before application of any type of lipstick. It helps your lipsticks glide on more easily and moisturizes and nourishes your lips, which prevents dryness and cracking.

  • To create your own long lasting lipstick, simply blot your lips with a tissue after lipstick application. Re-apply lipstick and blot again. This will absorb the oils in the lipstick and leave the pigment and wax.

  • If you are over 40, you will look best with a little shine on your lips. Also, use a lip liner if you intend to wear darker colored lipsticks. Lip liners essentially, build a wall that prevents lipsticks from ‘bleeding’.

  • No matter what color lipstick you choose, apply lip liner to the outline and fill in your lips. You can then follow with a gloss or lipstick. When wearing a red lipstick, use a brown lip liner on your lips before hand. Brown liners help red pigments last longer.

  • Keeping lipsticks refrigerated will help them last longer, especially in the summer months.

  • You can apply lipsticks right out of the tube, or use a lip brush to apply them. You’ll get a more professional look by using lip brushes though.

  • Avoid using very old lipsticks. They can become rancid and may have a terrible taste.

    Lip Gloss Makeup Beauty Tips

  • Apply lip gloss over lipstick or wear them alone. Remember that glosses emphasize and make your lips appear to be fuller.

  • Women with extra-full lips, should avoid using lip glosses. Note that Angelina Jolie, rarely wears them.

  • Use lip gloss to moisturize your lips. Keep a few shades in your purse for a quick makeup pick me up during the day. Buy lip gloss sets to create your own shades and colors.

  • Plumping lip glosses have cinnamon oil in them, which can burn your lips. If you have sensitive skin, best to forgo lip plumpers.

  • Instead of using lip plumpers, use cinnamon oil on your lips instead before applying lipsticks.

    Lip Liner Beauty Tips

  • If lip liner is too dark tone it down with a small amount of foundation then reapply lip liner.

  • Always use lip liners before and after applying your lipstick for added definition and dimension.

  • Always sharpen your lip liner before lining your lips then gently rub over the tip of the pencil with a tissue to soften and smooth the point.

  • Don’t wear lip liner and lipstick colors that contrast too heavily. Wear colors that blend together easily instead.

  • When applying lipstick, line your lips with a lip liner first, then fill in with your lipstick. If you have a hard time drawing in your lip lines, use dots along the lip line first, then connect the dots. This is basic crayon drawing 101.

  • Keep lip liners in the refrigerator or freezer to help them stay firm.

    Concealer Makeup Beauty Tips

  • Apply and blend concealers with your fingertips for a more natural look. Warm up concealers by applying them to your fingertips first, then rub them around gently. Warm concealers blend better than cool concealers.

  • Be sure to cover the inside of the nose bridge and the outer corner of your eye where women tend to have dark areas.

  • You can turn back the clock by applying a concealer to the lines at the corners of your mouth.

  • Any makeup concealer should match your natural skin tone or be one shade lighter. Use it to cover dark circles around your eyes, and any discoloration on your face. Another makeup artists trick is to apply concealer over foundation so it will cover up discolorations and will be less likely to be rubbed off.

  • If your skin is tanned, you’ll need a different shade of concealer to match your darker skin tone.

  • Concealer doesn’t have to be worn with any other makeup. Sometimes all you need is a little concealer and a lipstick. Just make sure your concealer matches your skin tone.

  • Concealer should be applied as sparingly as possible. You don’t want it to look cakey or thick.

  • Apply a little extra concealer under your eyes to cover dark circles.
