Benefits of Lugols Iodine – Using the Protocol to Prolong Good Health
Lugols iodine should be found in every household globally, but especially in America - where the typical diet is so poor. Sadly, too few people understand its vital role in nutrition. Deficiencies can have devastating results on optimal health. These shortcomings are vastly ignored by Western medicine today - as iodine's presence in our foods has become scarce.

Traditionally, people received sufficient amounts from the foods they consumed. In the 1920’s, iodine was added to salt (thus iodized salt) and was also present in commercial breads. You could also get sufficient amounts in many dietary sources, such as kelp, seaweed, some seafood, and produce grown in iodine rich soil.
Today, many ocean bearing sources are not available and farmland soils have become increasingly deficient, especially with the presence of glyphosate
. The iodine you get from iodized salt is enough to keep you from getting goiter but insufficient to help fight disease.
Dr. David Brownstein writes: "My research has shown that after testing over 4,000 patients for their iodine levels, over 96 percent of those tested are significantly low in iodine".
To understand WHY iodine is so scarce in the Standard American Diet, you have to look to the halogens. Unfortunately, iodized salt also contains sodium chloride, another halide. When you ingest iodine and chloride together, the halides compete for placement in the body and the lower weight chloride pushes iodine out of the receptors. This is by the Law of Displacement.
Since chloride is also found in drinking water, the human body is overwhelmed by it. This is also the case for bromide and fluoride, which are now as much a part of the food chain as chloride. Simply stated, with too little iodine and a flood of 3 lower weight halogens (gases) competing in the body, iodine is always displaced, and is therefore always the loser.

Since iodine has so many benefits, there is not one system of the body that doesn’t need it and store it. Supplementing Lugols iodine helps lower dis-ease and contributes to overall good health and well-being.
What is Lugols Iodine?
Lugol's iodine (a 5 percent solution) creates the PERFECT delivery system for your body! (Although Lugols is also available in 2 percent and 10 percent solutions as well). The 5 percent solution is a mixture of 5 percent iodine and 10 percent iodide.
It is named after the French physician Jean Lugol, who was the first to create the solution in 1829. According to WHO, Lugols iodine is on their List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications that contribute to a basic health system.
(Are you beginning to understand WHY iodine was removed from your food?)
Lugols iodine is the perfect iodine supplement because it contains all three forms of elemental iodine, that is: molecular iodine (I2), iodide (I-) and tri-iodide (I3-).
Nascent iodine (13-) is not a heavy metal chelator but Lugols is. The thyroid, skin and salivary glands need iodide. The breast, prostate, and intestines need iodine. Other storage sites like the brain, salivary glands, and stomach require molecular iodine – and require higher doses in order to be absorbed in sufficient amounts.
NEVER drink iodine without mixing it with juice or water first. It will burn your mouth!
What is the Iodine Protocol
The iodine protocol (guidelines) call for supplementing iodine dosing with it's companion nutrients. This will greatly diminish any problems you may have when you first start ingesting it.
Companion Nutrients for Lugols Iodine
There is a protocol for taking Lugols iodine and it involves taking the companion nutrients along with it.
They are: magnesium, selenium, vitamin C, and the B complex of vitamins. These essential nutrients are vital to iodine’s effectiveness and are sadly deficient from the Standard American Diet.
* Selenium (200-400mcg.) is required for proper glutathione peroxidase levels in the thyroid gland. When levels are too low, hydrogen peroxide builds up to dangerous levels in thyroid cells. This corrupts the host Thyroglubulin protein and changes it into a foreign protein that the immune system views as the enemy. When this occurs, anti-bodies attack the thyroid cell, causing nodule formation.
Analysis of medical literature is very clear: taking selenium with iodine is the best combination for overall thyroid health. In many studies, iodine has been shown to actually damage the thyroid, and selenium deficiency
appears to be the true culprit.
Furthermore, if you are iodine deficient
, selenium supplementation can "induce a dramatic fall of the already impaired thyroid function in clinically hypothyroid subjects". Read more here
If therefore, you are already hypothyroid, taking selenium supplements while iodine deficient will make your hypothyroidism worse.
*NOTE: Food is NOT a reliable source for getting sufficient amounts of selenium. There is no way of knowing if the soil they are grown in is sufficient in this trace mineral.
* Selenium as glutathione, as well as zinc are essential for the conversion of T4 (thyroxin) to the more active form of T3 (triiodothyronin) within the thyroid gland. This helps to maintain more appropriate levels of T3 thyroid hormone. Zinc is also required to maintain healthy thyroid receptors throughout the body and helps boost immunity
* Vitamin C (500mg taken several times daily) is needed to help clear the NIS (Sodium-Iodide Symporters) of bromine corruption. When bromine is absorbed by the NIS network, iodine absorption is vastly lowered. Vitamin C helps clear bromine from the intestinal and cellular NIS pathways and allows absorption of iodine throughout the body.
* Magnesium (400-1200mg daily) is needed to convert iodide to iodide and stored by the thyroid gland as iodine. Deficiencies can greatly contribute to hypothyroidism. (I get magnesium from using a few sprinkles of epsom salts
in my water, several times a day.)
* Niacin and the B Vitamins are essential to iodine absorption. Higher dose niacin helps stimulate energy production in the body, can reduce depression, and also helps to thin the blood safely. Recent research confirmed that niacin/niacinamide increased immune system strength by a factor of 2000.
Supplementing with the complex of B vitamins also increases the beneficial effects of niacin. I take sublingual vitamin B complex. Its so easy to do and the absorption is much faster. Works a charm!
Whenever levels of fluoride and mercury are in excess in the body, they can significantly damage the brains’ hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. Iodine assists in helping to displace/remove excess fluoride from the body. Both iodine and selenium are needed to remove mercury. When there is a build-up of mercury and/or fluoride in these glands, it can corrupt regulation of the TRH (Thyroid Releasing Hormone) and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), which adversely affects production of thyroid hormones
in the body.
Salt loading can be beneficial before starting on the iodine protocol as it helps remove excess bromine from the body and blood. Bromine inhibits iodine absorption as well as cause many side-effects you won’t like.
What is The Salt Loading Protocol?
Unprocessed salt is a necessary nutrient for many reasons – but on the iodine protocol, it can also help you deal with any adverse side effects! The chloride in salt competes with bromide in the kidneys, so a person who is low in salt will hold on to more bromide. At 6-10 grams per day, salt can increase the urinary excretion of bromide 10 fold!
The salt loading protocol is based on the U.S. Military’s salt IV protocol for bromide intoxication. Using salt, you can diminish the ill side effects that can result from bromide detox such as headache, acne, fatigue and oddly tingling in the feet at night when you lay down.
Drink 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon unrefined salt (such as sea salt or pickling and canning salt) dissolved in 1/2 cup warm water, then followed immediately with 12-16 oz pure water.
MAKE SURE YOUR WATER SOURCE IS CLEAR OF HALOGENS! (no fluorides/chlorides)
*You can purify city water simply by a process of distillation. Simply draw a container of water and allow it to sit out on the counter uncovered for half hour or more. Since chloride and fluoride are gases, they usually dissipate quite quickly.
Repeat salt loading in 30-45 minutes if needed. Keep repeating until copious urination begins, or until symptoms are relieved.
You can also help get rid of bromide and chloride in the body by doing salt pushing. Before bed, add one teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of warm PURE water to help dissolve the salt. Swish the salt vigorously in your mouth for 30-60 seconds. Repeat until the salt/water mixture is gone.
Why Do Some People Have Reactions to Supplementation
Some people complain of heart palpitations, anxiety, and even skin problems when they first start supplementing with Lugols iodine. This is a direct effect from consuming a poor diet, full of processed and refined foods that offer no nutritional value. It can also be a sign of a body that’s under heavy burden from excesses of heavy metals and an excess of the other 3 halogens. (bromide, fluoride, and chloride).
Note: You should NEVER start taking Lugols iodine without supplementing with companion nutrients for at least a month, prior to use. I never had a problem taking Lugols iodine but I'd been taking selenium for over 20 years and most of the other companion nutrients as well.
Dosage of Lugols Iodine
There are 12.5mgs per vertical drop.
Dr. Flechas recommends 12.5 mg/day, especially for his pregnant patients to optimize their child's intelligence. Researchers have determined that the average dietary intake of iodine for Japanese women is around 13.8mg per day. Dr. Flechas shared a couple of success stories in his lectures, where iodine supplementation at higher doses resulted in children with much higher intelligence.
There are many ways to supplement Lugols Iodine. It is always a good idea NOT to mix Lugols with fruit juice that contains ascorbic acid, (vitamin C) because it changes the iodine to iodide.
NEVER take iodine on a full stomach. Dosing should be done on an empty stomach, at least 20 minutes prior to consuming any food. This is the best way to ensure maximum benefits!
Always refer to manufacturer instructions as well!
Try Pulse Dosing if You Have Problems
Pulse dosing means that taking a break from iodine, while continuing to take companion nutrients and salt each day. This helps your body to remove toxins more efficiently.
Lugols Iodine is one of a kind! It can be of tremendous value to anyone in this day and age - when most everyone is overloaded with toxic substances.
Unfortunately, your doctor will not suggest iodine supplementation, because frankly they’re not taught to. Why they aren't, is a subject for another day. Just know that when you take iodine, your body will be thanking you. Humans can suffer a wide range of illnesses simply because of deficiencies. It is vital that everyone get iodine in their diet.
Always consult your physician before using natural remedies, especially for anyone with preexisting conditions or anyone currently taking prescription medications.
