Lose Weight While You Get a Good Night's Sleep

Are you trying to lose weight without much success? Do you have trouble sleeping at night? If you answered yes to both of these questions, you are not alone. Recent studies have shown that there is a definite connection between weight loss and lack of sleep.

Does a Good Night's Sleep Help You Lose Weight?

Dr. David Katz, commentator on Good Morning America, told viewers that recent studies showed people who get less than the recommended eight hours of sleep are at a greater risk of being overweight. Researchers believe that the reason for this is because not enough sleep affect two important hormone levels in the body, ghrelin and leptin.

Ghrelin is the hormone that works to make you feel hungry. It is thought that if your body is not asleep long enough, then this hormone is not being suppressed as it should during nighttime hours. This works to make you feel hungry more often throughout the day and can cause you to look for a midnight snack.

Leptin, however, is the hormone that makes you feel full and lack of sleep causes the reverse effect on this hormone. It actually works to suppress this hormone, which will eliminate the feeling of being full, even if you are. When you do not get the necessary eight hours of sleep both of these hormones go into chaos and work against you.
