Lighter Roots and Darker Hair Ends

by Cecilia
(Washington, USA)

I have been dying my hair since last November, and recently decided that I wanted to go back to my natural hair color, which is a dark blonde.(My eyebrows are black.) My hair was dyed a light reddish brown.

I went into my hairstylist today and was told that I should do blonde highlights to minimize the hair damage. When that was finished it was very streaky, so she put the blonde color all over my hair, and it turned a color that was white at the roots and yellow everywhere else. Then she used a toner to make it a darker color. It looked fine at the salon, but now that I am home the roots are still lighter than the rest, and it is still too light in general, compared to my eyebrows.

Would it damage my hair too much to use a store bought hair color to get it to a darker blonde? My hair still gets oily after dying it for this period of time, if that helps. Thanks!

You will probably be OK using a store bought hair color but you'll need to use it one of two ways, since your roots are lighter than the rest of your hair.

Option One

Mix the color according to manufacturer instructions. Apply to your roots first, then apply the color to the mid shaft and ends of your hair last.

Option Two

Mix only half the color according to manufacturer instructions. Apply it to the ends and mid shaft of your hair first.

Dilute the peroxide you've been provided, with equal parts of water. Shake well. Mix half the mixture (now a 10 volume peroxide) with the color. Apply this mixture to your roots. Check the color often to make sure its not getting too dark.

I would highly suggest using option 2 for the best results.

You could also just opt for a semi permanent color. If you use one, apply it to your roots first, then to the ends and mid hair shaft last.
