Light Blonde to Light Brown

I have been coloring my hair Extra Light Ash blonde for over one year now and I'm sick of it. Its too light and the ends are fuzzy and damaged. I want to go back to my natural color which is a light brown/dark blonde. Which shade and OTC brand should I use? Will the very light parts of my hair take the darker color?

Oh Pat, will they ever! Blonde hair is very porous so it will suck up any color (and the base of the color) you apply with a vengeance! I would suggest several things before you try and color your hair back to its original color.
First you need to
trim your hair and get rid of the frizzy dry ends.
Next, you need to deep condition your hair. I suggest that you use Hask Placenta with Olive oil. It is a protein conditioner with moisturizers, which you'll need to fill in the hair shaft so your hair doesn't suck up the color you apply as hard.
Then, you'll need to pick out which color you should use. I do not use box colors because they are too undependable so I cannot recommend one to you. You will also need to choose carefully so as not to mix color bases. For example, the light ash blonde hair color you previously used should have had a blue or green base. If you apply a golden color which has a yellow base, you will end up with green (or yellow green) hair.
If you're bound and determined to use a box color, I would stick with the brand you were using in the ash light blonde color and use an ash color in a level 7 or level 8. If the color comes out too drab, you may want to highlight your hair or tone your hair afterward.
If you are going to color your hair at home, you should know some basic facts about hair color. Its always a better idea to mix your own colors than have to depend on box color. You can grab an inexpensive copy of the
2009 Hair Color Guide until December 25th. You will learn a lot and it should help when you're making hair color decisions in the future.
