Layers in Curly Hair

I already have thick and very curly hair. I want to get layers for the nice style it gives your hair when it's blown out, but I don't want more volume.
Should I get layers and what kind of layers is good for my hair type? I never wear my hair curly, I usually blow it out but because it's naturally curly it ends up getting wavy two days later which I am OK with, but I don't want the layers to make it get out of control.

Since your hair is so thick, you may want to consider getting your
curly hair thinned, especially if you want to add lots of layers.
If you don't want your hair thinned, opt for longer layers, which won't add a lot of volume but give you some layers. The more layers you add to already
thick hair, the more volume you will create.
You can 'teach' your hair to lay down by simply using products that help lay down the cuticle of your hair. Products like
straightening shampoos used in conjunction with
straightening conditioners or either
smoothing shampoos with
smoothing conditioners really help over time.
Also, using
leave in conditioners on your hair and smoothing products also help lay your hair down. My girlfriend gave me a product for Christmas called
Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff that really works well too. (Even though I don't consider my hair to be blonde, it works the same on every hair color. Hair is hair is hair!)
Anything that adds weight to your hair will help pull out the curls.
You can do whats called a zero degree cut by yourself if you feel confident cutting a straight line.
Long layered haircut.
