Is dying permed hair OK?

by Arlene
(Kansas)

Can I dye my hair when I have a perm? I got the perm like half a year ago.

*************

Yes, as long as the perm has had time to completely 'set' in your hair, you can feel free to safely color your hair. Since its been around 6 months ago, your perm has had plenty of time!

Since perms lift your hair somewhat and because perming is a chemical process, you will need to do a few deep conditioning treatments on your hair before you color to even out hair porosity.

Once your hair is properly hydrated, the color will apply more evenly and will be less likely to grab onto your hair.

Word of advice: Stay close to your natural hair color level for the best hair color results. If you try and color your hair outside your color range (like a light blonde color to a medium brown color) you are likely to get a much darker color than you intended.

If you have a medium brown color for example, choose hair colors that would compliment your hair in the medium brown color range.

Semi permanent colors are a great choice for anyone who just wants to refresh color. Since they are deposit only colors, you are far more likely to get good results! (As long as you choose colors that are close to your own hair color level.)
