How to Relieve Stress and Save Your Sanity

Learning how to relieve stress can change and possibly even save your sanity. When you are highly emotional or upset, its important to know a few ways to calm down so you don't explode into space!

However, how many times have you heard that if you can just avoid stress, you'll be much healthier and happier? That sounds absurd, doesn't it? Who the heck can avoid it? (I'd like to live on that planet!)

Here's a great way to handle ALL SORTS of stress in your life! I read this a while back and thought it was an awesome analogy!

A Great Lesson on Stress

A young lady confidently walked around the room with a raised glass of water while leading a seminar and explaining stress management to her audience. Everyone knew she was going to ask the ultimate question, 'Half empty or half full?' She fooled them all. "How heavy is this glass of water?" she inquired with a smile. Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. To 20 oz.

She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.

If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

She continued, "and that's the way it is with stress. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on."

"As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden - holding stress longer and better each time practiced.

So, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don't carry them through the evening and into the night. Pick them up again tomorrow if you must.

When you let go of your stress for small amounts at a time, it's such a huge release! Everyone handles stress differently. It's learning how to relieve stress that's important!

How Stress Affects Your Body

Physiologically speaking, stress causes your adrenal glands to secrete large amounts of powerful chemicals, which suppresses immunity and impairs interferon production. (Interferon is a potent immunity booster).

If you have ever talked to anyone who has had an organ transplant, you know that their doctor has prescribed interferon to them to help their body accept the transplanted organ. Without it, their body will automatically reject the transplant.

High stress levels are correlated with many diseases, suicide, and skin disruptions. It is estimated that nearly 80 percent of all cancer cases originate from some type of mental strain. Emotional stress can freeze you in your tracks like a deer caught in head lights. It slows down all functions of the body and disrupts your body's ability to heal. It also causes your brain to release powerful chemicals called neuropeptides.

These compounds further suppress your immune system. Once you're susceptible, free radicals can form or harmful germs can invade body tissue and take over. It is important to know how to relieve stress so you don't become the next victim.

So, what can you do? Can you really learn how to relieve stress? Yes! Everyone needs to learn how to chill. If you don't know how to relieve stress in your life, please take the time to find an outlet. Take control of your stress now before it takes control of your health and your life! De-stressing needs to be a major part of your daily routine.

How to Relieve Stress

  • Let Go and Let God! - If you can let go and trust your life to God, He will take care of you. Commit yourself to do what is intended for you in your life and it will set you free.

    Free to live without the 'things' you don't need in life. Free to do His will. Free to give, free to live, and free to be you and be the best you can be. You just know that everything will work out the way its supposed to.

    Everything happens for a reason. If something bad happens, then maybe you needed a life lesson or maybe there's something good right around the corner. If things were perfect all the time, you'd be bored to death. Life challenges us. Embrace them and move on.

    About 2000 years ago, Jesus said a very wise thing:

    "Don't be anxious about tomorrow as tomorrow will be anxious enough for itself".

  • Leave it Behind You - Take the stresses of the day and throw them out the window. You can either envision your stress in your hand and throw them away OR write them down on paper and burn them in the fireplace. This simple yet powerful exercise can LIFT your spirits and help get rid of at least some of the trauma you may be feeling.

    It is also wise not to carry your work life over to your home life if you can help it. It's OK to discuss daily events with your loved ones from time to time but not every day. Just don't go overboard or allow your stresses at work to filter into your family time and the pleasure that creates.

  • Do Something YOU Like - Do things you like to do such as; take a long walk, get to bed early, read a magazine, watch a thunderstorm from the front porch, spend time with your BFF, fix a pot of coffee late day, or talk to someone you love. Anything you like to do will relieve some of the pent-up emotions you're carrying around.

  • Take a Chill Pill - Have your physician prescribe something for your nerves. Xanax, and other anti anxiety medications, help take the edge off. If you prefer something more natural, there are many.

    - Kava Kava or simply Kava can be consumed as a whole herb supplement or the extracts of the herb can be mixed in drinks. Kava gives you a sense of well being. The herb contains Kava lactones which help in relaxation. The unique feature of Kava is that it does not affect memory or mental alertness. Kava can be used to calm nerves, relax muscles, and get a more peaceful sleep.

    - Valerian Root has been compared to the drug 'Diazepam' which is a anxiety reliever. Valerian root relaxes the nervous system and induces deep sleep. It also relaxes tensed muscles.

    - Passion Flower contains flavonoids which act as an antioxidant, which are nutrients that help neutralize free radicals. Passion flower also acts as a sedative. Passion Flower decreases anxiety and induces deep sleep.

    - Scull Cap is a nerve tonic. It stabilizes moods during the period of stress.

    - Hops is a mild tranquilizer. It pacifies a stressed mind. It is used if there are sleeplessness and irritability. If you don't want to take the supplement, try a few beers instead, which contain hops.

    - Catnip acts on the nervous system and the digestive system. It calms down overactive brain action and is effective in relieving the symptoms of peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome which are associated with stress. You can also share some with your kitter if you like! Meow!

    - Chamomile boosts immunity which is suppressed during stressful times. It also helps prevent infection and relieve gastro-intestinal symptoms.

    Any of these stress relievers taking taken at the right time, can really make a big difference. Take any of them only if you check with your doctor first. There could be contraindications for them if you're already taking prescription medications.

  • Heat Relieves - Take a hot bath or hot shower or get in a hot tub, shower, or steam bath. Don't have time for a shower? Get out the heating pad or bundle up with a warm blanket. Heat also helps soothe sore muscle aches and help you relax a more natural way.

  • Get a Rub Down - Massage therapy is called therapy for a reason! Stress makes you tense UP. Having someone rub soreness releases cares. You may have to pay a professional to do it but what price will you ultimately pay if you don't de-stress? Massage therapy is all about learning how to relieve stress.

    Find someone in your local area that can help you. If you don't personally know any massage therapists, ask friends and family. I'll bet someone knows someone who can help you! Massage is your friend when you want to learn how to relieve stress and anxiety!

  • Take a Break - We all need a break from time to time! In times of high stress, why not take a day off from work FOR YOU! Not because you're sick, not because you have to take the kids to the doctor, and not because you need to catch up on paperwork! Take a break from your daily doldrums to refresh and renew your mental energy. You might even take a spa day! Why not?

  • Tears are Good - Did you know that crying is actually good for you? Not only do tears 'get out' emotional blows, they actually heal tired eyes and bring about mental clarity. Bawling like a baby can also help remove toxic build up and elevate your mood.

    Sitting down and having a good cry helps remove negative feelings and anxiety. If you need a friend to hold your hand while you're crying, make a phone call to someone you trust! Most people are empathetic to emotional stress because they've been there, done that! You may be surprised at how crying around others can bring a closeness that you may have never experienced.

    Properly de-stressing is required in our fast track world! Knowing how to relieve stress and anxiety in your daily life, can make a big difference in the way you handle things from day to day. Remember that you have control of only you! You can't control other people so don't try. Trying to change someone that doesn't want to change is self defeating. Simply controlling how you react to others is also a big step in the right direction.
