How to Relieve Stress and Save
Your Health

Learning how to relieve stress can change and possibly save your life. However, how many times have you heard that if you can avoid stress, you'll be free of illness and be much healthier and happier?

That sounds absurd, doesn't it? Who the heck can avoid stress?

That's like asking you to avoid cold in the winter or heat in the summer. In recent years, stress has finally become recognized as a major immuno-suppressant and a primary cause of illness and disease.

How Stress Affects Your Life

Stress is often the precursor to: cancer, heart disease, hypertention, insomnia, diabetes, constipation, diarrhea, hypervenilation, suicide, and so many other major health problems. Knowing how to relieve stress could actually save your life!

Disease and illness are just part of the equation though. Stress and anxiety can cause a sane person to make illogical decisions. It often causes good people to go sideways in their decision making processes and can absolutely send them over the edge of reason.

The stress from financial losses can cause major desperation which can lead to murder, robbery, rape, physical abuse, verbal abuse, and general ill will toward others. These are just a few of the after effects of just the 'right amount of stress' at 'just the right time'.

When times get hard, its more important than ever to know how to relieve stress in you!

How Stress Affects Your Body

Physiologically speaking, stress causes the adrenals to secrete adrenaline and cortisone. Cortisone is a powerful immuno-suppressant that is especially secreted in the Thymus, Lymph Nodes and Spleen. High cortisone levels impair the production of interferon, which is one of the body’s most potent immunity agents.

If you have ever talked to anyone who has had an organ transplant, you know that their doctor has prescribed interferon to them to help their body accept the implanted organ. Without it, their body will automatically reject the implanted organ.

Diseases associated with high cortisone levels include cancer, hypertension, arthritis, stroke, chronic infections, skin diseases, Parkinson’s disease, and ulcers. Elevated cortisone is also associated with an increased tendency towards suicide. The role played by stress in the causation of cancer is so great that it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that some 80% or more cancer cases have their immediate origin in some form of mental pressure or strain.

Grief, fear, distress, worry and anger are emotions that can have horrible effects on the body and it’s functions. Researchers have found that these emotions cause the release of powerful chemicals from the brain called neuropeptides.

These potent compounds have a definite immune-suppressive action. Scientists have traced a pathway from the brain to the immune cells proving that negative emotions can stop the immune cells from functioning altogether.

Once this happens, harmful microbes, free radicals or cancer causing cells can invade any body tissue. How to relieve stress takes on a whole new meaning.

It is important to know how to relieve stress so you don't become a victim. So, what can be done? Can you really learn how to relieve stress? Yes! Everyone needs to learn how to chill. If you don't know how to relieve stress in your life, please take the time to find an outlet. Take control of your stress now before it takes control of your health and your life! De-stressing needs to be a major part of your daily schedule.

How to Relieve Stress

  • Leave it Behind You - Take the stresses of the day and leave them behind, where ever that might be. Not so easy to do as we live through the busiest times of our lives. (Ever wonder what's it all for and what the heck you are doing?)

Don't carry your work life over to your home. It's OK to discuss daily events with our loved ones. You should! Just don't go overboard or allow the worries of the job filter into your family time and pleasure that having one can create.

  • Relax More - Learn to meditate, relax, read a book, or play with your children in your free time.

Children, old people, and animals are special. Take time to spend some time with someone special in your life that adds something special to it.

  • Do Something for You - Do things like take a long walk, get to bed early, be quiet and hear the sounds of nature, spend time with your favorite friend, have a nice cup of hot tea or talk to a loved one.

  • Do Unto Others - Do something nice for someone else! This always makes you feel better about you! It is much better (and more awesome) to give, than to receive! Doing something nice for someone else gives you those 'warm fuzzies'. You just feel better after giving of yourself, whatever that might be.

  • Let Go and Let God! Another great way to relieve stress.

If you can let go and trust your life to God, He will take care of you. Commit yourself to do what is intended for you in your life and it will set you free.

Free to live without the 'things' you don't need in life. Free to do His will. Free to give, free to live, and free to be you and be the best you can be. You just know that everything will work out the way its supposed to.

Everything happens for a reason. If something bad happens, then maybe you needed a life lesson or maybe that's just the way life is. If things were perfect all the time, you'd be bored to death. Life challenges us. Embrace it and move on.

About 2000 years ago, Jesus said a very wise thing.

"Don't be anxious about tomorrow as tomorrow will be anxious enough for itself".

"Let the days own troubles be sufficient for the day".

  • Take Something Organic - Take Omega Fatty Acids like cod liver oil, high lignan flax oil, or cold pressed olive oil. (If you're buying flax oil, opt for high lignan flax oil for it's extra health benefits. It's got more 'umph' which is better for you!) Daily doses of oils can help with depression and can help you control stress levels.

  • Take a Chill Pill - Have your physician prescribe something for your nerves. Xanax, and other anti anxiety medications, help take the edge off. If you prefer something more natural, there are many. How to relieve stress is an important part of your health, so get the help you need.

    - Kava Kava or simply Kava can be consumed as a whole herb supplement or the extracts of the herb can be mixed in drinks. Kava gives you a sense of well being. The herb contains Kava lactones which help in relaxation. The unique feature of Kava is that it does not affect memory or mental alertness. Kava can be used to relieve stress, relax muscles, and get a more peaceful sleep.

    - Valerian Root has been compared to the drug 'Diazepam' which is a anxiety reliever. Valerian root relaxes the nervous system and induces deep sleep. It also relaxes tensed muscles.

    - Passion Flower contains flavonoids which act as an antioxidant, which are nutrients that help neutralize free radicals. Passion flower also acts as a sedative. Passion Flower decreases anxiety and induces deep sleep.

    - Scull Cap is a nerve tonic. It stabilizes moods during the period of stress.

    - Hops is a mild tranquilizer. It pacifies a stressed mind. It is used if there are sleeplessness and irritability. If you don't want to take the supplement, try a few beers instead, which contain hops.

    - Catnip acts on the nervous system and the digestive system. It calms down overactive brain action and is effective in relieving the symptoms of peptic ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome which are associated with stress. Meow!

    - Chamomile boosts immunity which is depressed during stressful times, which helps prevent infection. Chamomile also helps relieve gastro-intestinal symptoms.

Any of these stress relievers taking taken at the right time, can really make a big difference. Take any of them only if you check with your doctor first. There could be contraindications for them if you're already taking prescription drugs.

  • Heat Relieves - Take a hot bath or hot shower or get in a hot tub, shower, or steam bath. Talk about relaxing! Don't have time for a shower? Get out the heating pad or drink a cup of hot chocolate. Hot anything will soothe your muscle aches and help you relax a more natural way. Heat soothes in this instance and should be used. Even a cup of hot tea, milk, or coffee works well. How to relieve stress? Two words. HOT TUB! If you don't have a hot tub, take a hot shower instead.

How to Relieve Stress in Your Shoulders

Take a bath sized towel and completely wet it. Ring it out thoroughly in the sink. Zap it in the microwave for about 1 minute on high power. If it's not smoking hot, microwave it for another minute. WITH TONGS, remove the towel from the microwave. When it's cool enough to touch but still very warm, apply it to your shoulders. It relieves aches and pains instantly. Repeat as needed.

  • Massage - Get a deep tissue massage. Talk about relaxing! Yes, you do have to pay a price but what price will you ultimately pay if you don't de-stress? Massage therapy is all about learning how to relieve stress.

Find someone in your local area that can help you. If you don't personally know any massage therapists, ask friends and family. I'll bet someone knows someone who can help you! Massage is your friend when you want to learn how to relieve stress and anxiety!

  • Laugh - Laugh often and don't be afraid to laugh or be happy. Remember: A pessimist forgets to laugh. An optimist laughs to forget!

Watch an good comedy on TV like SNL or watch a comedian that you like. Find a friend who always cheers you up or makes you laugh. Life is too short to walk around with a scowl on your face all the time plus, it'll make you look much older!

  • Breathe - Relearn how to breathe correctly. Breathing isn't done by the chest, its done from the diaphragm which is below and outside the lungs.

The correct way to breathe. Inhale air into your stomach first, then fill up your lungs, then exhale air from your lungs and then from your stomach. This is the correct way to breathe.

When you start breathing correctly, you will start to relax. And relaxing is the name of the game!

  • Relax - Learning how to relax is a life changing experience. Listen to soft music, waterfall sounds, or a simple meditation while you sit and relax on the floor. Practice deep breathing techniques as you turn off the memories of your hectic life. Deep relaxation will rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul.

Properly de-stressing can literally save your life! Knowing how to relieve stress and anxiety in your daily life, can make a big difference in the way you handle it from day to day. Remember that you have control of only you! You can't control other people so don't try. Trying to change someone that doesn't want to change is self defeating. Simply controlling how you react to others is also a big step in the right direction.
