How to improve your hair for the future

by Rann
(United Arab Emirates)

I'm a 15 year old teenager, and my hair is shoulder length and wavy. But it's always dry although I use conditioner every time I wash my hair. It's also thin/fine, and I'm really afraid of losing most of my hair when I grow up because my mum and dad have thin hair although my brothers don't. Anyway I'd really appreciate it if you tell me what important vitamins I'm supposed to take to promote hair growth and make my hair thicker, and how can I keep my hair healthy so when I grow up it would still look great. Thank you, Rann.

Its very refreshing to get a question about steps you can take now to keep your hair healthy in the future!

In most cases, heredity/genetics are a major player in the way your hair will look in the future. However, there are many things you can do now that will help you prevent premature thinning.

How to Improve Your Hair for the Future

  • Take biotin supplements for hair growth. You can also eat foods that are high in biotin like egg yolks, carrots, peanuts, and Swiss chard/spinach. There are other hair vitamins that are essential for hair growth, like beta carotene.

  • Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to healthy hair and the function of the sebaceous glands found in the hair follicles. These fatty acids are contained in cold pressed oils (like olive oil) especially. Alternately, you can also get omega 3 oils by eating a lot of fatty fish, like salmon and tuna.

  • Dry hair is also sometimes attributed to genetics but if you are using a conditioner and your hair still feels dry, try another one. Most moisturizing conditioners have built in humectants that attract moisture to your hair. Vitamin rich leave in conditioners are a great choice.

  • There are many super-foods that help you grow thicker hair. Add these to your diet regularly to make sure your hair stays thicker longer.

  • Don't overdo. Don't over-wash your hair or overdo brushing. Your hair should only be shampooed a few times a week, not daily. This allows the natural oils you have to saturate and protect your hair. Alternately, over-brushing can lead to friction, which dries out your hair. It can also cause hair breakage.

These are just some basic steps you can take but they will help! Good luck to you and your future hair!
