How does Hair Color affect Highlights?
by Sarah

I got caramel highlights done by a professional a couple of months ago, and I'm interested in dying my hair fully to that caramel tone. I don't have the money to get it done professionally so I was going to try dying from a box. Will the highlights affect the outcome?

You didn't tell me what your overall hair color was. This makes a huge difference in the results you'll get.
If you match the caramel color perfectly and its not a high lift color, there should be little visible difference.
However, if you're using a high lift color, then they'll lighten up too. The results should be alright though. It will most probably look like you have added more highlights in a lighter color.
To get the best results, call the salon that did the highlights and ask them what color they used. If you have to, tell them that you're moving and need the brand they used and the color formula. (Level hair color, (which should be a number), and level of peroxide.) If the salon's reputable, they should be willing to share this information with you.
Box colors will not give you professional results. You are much better off mixing your own color with your own peroxide. If you want to color your hair at home, please refer to my hair color guide for the best results.
