Myth - High Cholesterol Does NOT cause Heart Disease

Perhaps you’ve heard that high cholesterol levels contribute to heart disease by clogging the arteries. But also perhaps you haven’t read up on the latest literature. While heart disease is caused by an inflammation of the blood vessels, cholesterol is not the culprit! Instead it is caused by eating a low fat diet, which has been the mantra for doctors to tell patients by mainstream medicine!

So one of my best friends called me today and we were talking. He recently had some heart problems and went in for an EKG. While everything checked out and was fine, he still seemed down in the dumps. When I pressed him further, he said that he was still worried. But then he perked up and said that there was some good news! His cholesterol levels were fantastic!

Even though I’ve warned him about mainstream medicine, he was still buying into what he was being told by his doctor. I explained to him what I’m about to explain to you.

It used to be that the only accepted therapy for high cholesterol were medications to lower it (statins) and a diet that severely restricted SALT and FAT. But these recommendations are no longer deemed to be valid. A few years ago it was discovered that inflammation of the artery walls are the root cause – not high cholesterol.

Twenty-five percent of the population take statin drugs every day - despite the fact that Americans have reduced the fat content of their diets, more Americans will perish from heart disease this year than ever before.

"The long-established dietary recommendations have created epidemics of obesity and diabetes, the consequences of which dwarf any historical plague in terms of mortality, human suffering and dire economic consequences".

The AHA (American Heart Association) statistics show that 75 million Americans have heart disease, 20 million have diabetes, and 57 million have pre-diabetes. These statistics will only increase in time as more and more people buy into the many myths of modern medicine.

Here’s the deal...

Without inflammation already present in the body, there’s no way possible for cholesterol to gather on blood vessel walls and cause heart problems. Without inflammation, cholesterol freely circulates through the bloodstream as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to be trapped on blood vessel walls.

High Cholesterol is Not the Problem

Inflammation is your body’s own defense system against foreign invaders such as toxins, free radicals, viruses, or bacteria. However, if we chronically expose the body to injury via toxic substances the body was never designed to handle, a condition called chronic inflammation ensues.

Of course, no one in their right mind would voluntarily expose themselves to toxic substances over and over. The only way it happens is when we listen to our doctors telling us to eat low fat, high carbs and high polyunsaturated fats. These simple recommendations cause repeated injury; which in turn cause heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and obesity.

The American diet is rich is a plethora of dietary nightmares... highly processed foods like HFCS (high fructose corn syrup), refined flour (and all the products made from them), and the excessive consumption of simple carbohydrates and omega 6 fats found in vegetable oils.

"Take a moment to visualize rubbing a stiff brush repeatedly over soft skin until it becomes quite red and nearly bleeding. You kept this up several times a day, every day for five years. If you could tolerate this painful brushing, you would have a bleeding, swollen infected area that became worse with each repeated injury. This is a good way to visualize the inflammatory process that could be going on in your body right now".

Irregardless of where the inflammation occurs, the result is always the same. A diseased artery looks inflamed. Several times a day and every day, the foods people consume create small injuries – compounding into more injuries – which in turn causes a perpetual and ongoing inflammatory response by the body.

Foods packed with simple sugars and carbohydrates, or processed with omega-6 oils for longer shelf life have been a large part of the American diet for six decades now. What we are now realizing, is that these foods have been slowly poisoning everyone.

How Inflammation Occurs

When you consume sugar repeatedly, blood sugars quickly rise. In response, the pancreas secretes insulin, whose job it is to drive sugar into the cell for ATP (energy). If the cell is full and needs no glucose (sugar), then it is rejected. When glucose is rejected, blood sugars rise and begin producing more insulin and glucose is converted to fat and stored.

You see, blood sugar is controlled in a very narrow range. Extra sugar molecules can attach to a variety of proteins, that in turn injure the blood vessel wall. This repeated injury sets off inflammation. When blood sugar is spiked several times daily, every day, it damages blood vessel walls repeatedly. Although you cannot see it, it is there.

Not only do processed foods contain hidden sugars, they are also baked or fried in processed oils that are high in omega 6 oils - which acts as a preservative. And while omega 6 oils are essential to cell membranes – controlling what goes in and out - they need to be in balance with omega 3 oils. If the balance goes wacky one way or another, the cell membranes produce chemicals called cytokines, that directly cause inflammation.

The standard American diet has produced a severe imbalance of these two fats. The ratio of imbalance for omega 6:omega 3 ranges anywhere from 15:1 to as high as 30:1. You can well imagine what effect that’s having in your bloodstream – with cytokines galore! An optimal ratio is more like 3:1.

Anyone who’s carrying around excess weight only makes matters worse. Eating processed foods creates overloaded fat cells that dump out large quantities of pro-inflammatory chemicals that cause injury by having high blood sugar. As the inflammatory process continues unabated, it becomes a vicious cycle that creates heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and finally Alzheimers.

The more refined foods humans consume, the more the inflammation switch is turned on, minute by minute, hour by hour, and day by day. Your body was not meant nor designed to deal with such excesses.

High cholesterol has been blamed for heart problems for far too long. Its time to set the record straight and stop worrying about high cholesterol!

Benefits of Cholesterol

  • Cholesterol is vital for balanced hormones that protect the body against heart disease and cancer.

  • Cholesterol helps create sex hormones including andogen, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, and DHEA.

  • Cholesterol helps utilize Vitamin D, which is critical for all body systems including the bones, nerves, proper growth, mineral metabolism, muscle tone, insulin production, fertility, and strong immunity.

  • Bile salts made by the liver require cholesterol and are critical to the digestive process and absorption of dietary fats.

  • Cholesterol functions as a powerful antioxidant and protects the body from free radical damage to tissues.

  • Cholesterol is vital for proper functioning of the brain and is used by serotonin receptors, the “feel good” chemical.

  • Breast milk, rich in cholesterol, contains a special enzyme for the baby to properly utilize it.

  • Babies and children need cholesterol for proper growth and development of the brain, nervous system, and immune function.

  • Cholesterol helps maintain proper functioning of the intestines and maintains the integrity of the intestinal wall. Low cholesterol diets can lead to leaky gut syndrome and other digestive problems.

  • Cholesterol is critical to repair of damaged cells, which is exactly why it’s vital to our senior citizens. Women with high cholesterol actually live the longest!

    "Dr. Meyer Texon MD, a respected pathologist practicing at New York University Medical Center, observes that accusing saturated fat and cholesterol for hardening of the arteries is like accusing white blood cells of causing infection, rather than helping the immune system address it".

    The only real way to turn things around is to make a dramatic change in the diet; choosing foods that are closer to their natural state.

    Forget About High Cholesterol and Change Your Diet

  • To build more muscle, consume more protein.

  • Choose a wide variety of complex carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables, instead of simple carbohydrates.

  • Cut down on omega 6 oils and processed foods that are laden with them.

    - One Tablespoon of corn oil = 7280mg of omega 6 oils.
    - One Tablespoon of soybean oil = 6940 mg omega 6 oils.

    Instead, choose cold pressed olive oil, coconut oil, or butter made from grass fed cows.

  • Eat more eggs! They are a whole food and do not cause high cholesterol!

  • Choose whole fat milk instead of skin milk.

  • Animal fats (saturated fats) contain less than 20 percent omega 6 oils. Forget the science that pushes polyunsaturated fats. Saturated fats do not cause heart disease, nor does it cause high cholesterol. Since scientists and physicians now know that cholesterol does not cause heart inflammation, the concern about saturated fats is even more absurd today.

    "The cholesterol theory led to the no-fat, low-fat recommendations that in turn created the very foods now causing an epidemic of inflammation. Mainstream medicine made a terrible mistake when it advised people to avoid saturated fat in favor of foods high in omega-6 fats. We now have an epidemic of arterial inflammation leading to heart disease and other silent killers".

    The only way to turn things around is by making a change. Manufactured foods are not your body’s friend. As long as you continue to consume fast foods that are devoid of nutrition, you will continue to battle the bulge. High cholesterol is not the problem. Inflammation is!
