Hiding Blonde Highlights
by Becki
(Maryland)
I just recently (2 days ago) colored over my blonde highlights to a color that is as dark as my natural hair color (brunette). I waited 24 hours after applying and rinsing the color to formally shampoo and condition. After I did this I noticed some of the blonde from the highlights coming through. This was only a little bit and hardly noticeable but I am really picky about how my hair looks.
I used one of the boxes that you can buy at a pharmacy (Espresso 40 Loreal Paris Feria). I was wondering if I recolor my hair, will it help further hide the blonde that is coming through and darken the look? I also should mention that I take very good care of my hair and it is in excellent condition. I would feel comfortable dying it again considering the shape that it is in.
I cannot afford to see my stylist right now and my intended goal was to dye my hair close to my natural color so when it grows out I can just let it be until I can return to the salon for my regular visits.
Thank you,
Becki

God bless you Becki! Kudos to you for taking such good care of your hair. All women should treasure their hair as much as you do!
You are definitely moving in the right direction. Yes, you can safely go ahead and color over your highlights again. I would this time try a 10 volume peroxide though.
Most box colors come with a 20 volume peroxide. You just need to water it down a bit 1:1 with some water. Your color will be deeper and richer and should take better to your blonde highlights that are showing through. Don't wash your hair again for a
couple of days after you rinse out the color + shampoo + condition it. Dark colors have very dense color molecules and it takes a few days to get the color to absorb fully into the hair cuticle. You may also consider doing a deep conditioning treatment in your hair after you do wash it to help close the hair cuticle as much as possible. This will help conserve the hair color too.
You may still notice some color coming out in the shower after you wait, but it'll be far less than if you had shampooed straight away. Best of luck!
