Help for Sticky, Hard Hair

by Jessica
(Chicago)

About 2 weeks ago my hair started getting very weird and it is really making me sad. I shower, shampoo and condition my hair but when it dries (air dry or hair dryer) it feels sticky all over and it gets hard on the ends so I can't run my fingers through it. I've tried everything already that i found online; salt, baby shampoo, dish washing soap, no conditioner, just rinsing it for a while, etc. Still when i touch it while it feels sticky all over like I left some products in my hair but I know it was all rinsed out.

I did start going to the pool every day so maybe it has something with chlorine but I swam my whole life before and nothing like that happened before now:(

This really sounds like product build up on your hair. Many people don't realize that shampoo's and conditioners are also products that affect your hair, just as much as gels, mousse or hairsprays, etc.

Try clarifying your hair first. You can either buy clarifying shampoos or make your own clarifying rinse by mixing one part apple cider vinegar with four parts water. (i.e. 1/4 C vinegar with 3/4 C water) After you shampoo, pour the mixture on your hair and allow it to sit for 4 - 5 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly. Use a smoothing conditioner or a detangling product if your hair is too tangled to comb out.

This should help but if it doesn't, try using baking soda. In an almost full bottle of shampoo, add around 1 - 2 teaspoons of baking soda directly into the shampoo. You can also add it to your conditioner if you like. Shake up the bottles to mix it around afterward. Then shampoo and condition as normal.

If these two things don't work, switch to organic hair products. It could be that some of the harsh chemical ingredients that regular products contain are interfering with the health of your hair.

When you go swimming in the pool, be sure to rinse your hair completely afterward. Chlorine should not make your hair sticky though.
