Hair Rebonding Hair Loss

by Anna K

Hello, I had gone for chemical hair straightening (hair rebonding) about 5 months back. I use Schwarzkopf repair rescue shampoo and conditioner.

My concern is that I am losing about 50-60 hairs everyday and sometimes more. I also experience some kind of itching on my scalp. I oil my hair regularly and do hot oil treatments with a warm towel. I shampoo my hair after every 2 days.

I also drink lots of water however, what can I do to reduce my hair loss. I have hair that is a little longer than shoulder length. I am a little worried. What precautions can I take? Can I change my shampoo? Please help me.

There are a few things you didn't mention. Has your hair loss been gradually getting worse since you had your hair rebonded or did it just start happening? These things really matter when you're asking for advice.

Also, was the brand of rebonding used Schwarzkopf? Is that why you're using their products?

I have read a lot about hair rebonding and its effect on hair loss and itchy scalp. It seems that many women have itchy scalp and hair loss months after the rebonding process.

As for hair loss, everyone loses around 50-100 hairs a day, so your hair loss is a fairly normal amount. You maybe shampooing too often so it might help to cut it back to twice a week only.

Also, use a wide toothed comb on wet hair, removing knots from the bottom to the top. Brush dry hair only a few times a week. Allowing your hair to dry naturally is also the best thing to do! Blow dryers create more heat, which will dry your scalp and hair even further.

You may need to change your shampoo and conditioner, especially if you've been using the same one over and over again. Product build up can happen quickly, even with shampoos and conditioners. Switching brands helps to remove product build up and might also relieve your dry scalp.

Do not itch your dry scalp with your finger nails. That only makes itching worse. Use your fingertip pads to gently massage your scalp only!

You may also want to try a vinegar rinse on your hair and apply it to your scalp too! If the chemical straightener was applied to your scalp, it might have changed the pH of your scalp to an acid pH. Vinegar helps to change the acidity back to more neutral or alkaline.

You can get the recipe for a vinegar rinse on my hair remedies page.

New shampoos and conditioners to try? I would switch to another product for chemically treated hair. I can't recommend a brand cause I don't know what country you're in or what brands are available to you.

You may also want to switch to coconut oil, instead of using hot oil. Coconut oil is gentler and more natural for your hair and scalp. You could also take Super Biotin supplement (Vitamin B) which helps with hair growth.
