Common Hair Problems and Solutions

Hair problems can happen to anyone at any time.

You might grow up with long luscious locks but as you get older, your hair might lose its lackluster and look dry and dull.

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball but you can usually turn a bad hair situation around, by trying a different approach or a few new products.

The key to most hair problems is to find out the root cause of the problem and/or to use the right products that work for your hair condition. Use the wrong products, and you can create a hair disaster.

There are so many products on the market today that promise to help you. Knowing which ones will work best for you is instrumental in selecting the right ones. It can be crazy confusing even if you’ve been buying them for years!

Some hair products promise you the moon but only give you moon rocks! The key is to know your own hair texture, know the ingredients to avoid, and know which products perform best on your hair.

Everyone, men and women alike, want their hair to look healthy. Even people with dreadlocks prefer that their hair looks natural and not frizzy. Fortunately, different hair products are specifically designed for different hair problems.

Common Hair Problems and Solutions

Frizzy hair problems – If your hair looks like you got electrocuted, your need products that help lay down your hair cuticle and smooth your hair. Smoothing shampoos and conditioners won’t straighten your hair, they simply make it more manageable, silky, and shiny. The more your hair cuticles lay down, the more light can refract from your hair.

Smoothing creams can also help frizzy hair without looking greasy. Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff is a great product for all hair colors.

Greasy hair problems – Hair that looks like you poured a can of oil on it, can easily be fixed with products for oily hair. When your sebaceous glands produce too much oil, you need something to take away some of the oils. Don’t get carried away though and remove all of them. Natural oils help protect your hair from the environment and make it look silky and shiny. The trick is to remove enough oil, but not so much that it leaves you with dry hair.

Overwashing your hair can actually signal your hair follicles to produce more oils. If you're used to washing everyday and your hair looks oily, you'll need to shampoo less often!

Hormones play a huge part in oil overproduction. If you’ve never had greasy hair before and suddenly develop it, it’s probably an imbalance in your hormones. This typically happens in your late teens and early 20’s. The good news is that this imbalance won’t last forever. In time, your hormones will calm down and your hair will be back to normal.

Thin, limp hair problemsFlat hair is a problem when you don’t have enough of the stuff! Your hair can look limp and lifeless unless you use the right products. Volumizing shampoos help by adding a coating to your hair. Protein treatments help strengthen your hair but remember that your hair also needs moisture. There is a fine line however, in how much moisture to use. Use too much, and your hair will only look flat again.

Also, layering products (like gels or mousse) also helps. You must experiment to know which types of products work best for you!

Dry hair problems – Hair that’s extremely dry needs to be moisturized regularly. Things that can make your hair dry are using the wrong shampoos and conditioners, overusing hair products, hormone imbalances, genetics to some extent, overusing protein-rich hair products, washing your hair with hard water, and the inability of your body to properly regulate the sebaceous glands. Most of the time, dry, brittle hair can be reversed by using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners.

You may also need to use deep conditioning hair treatments from time to time. You can use overnight moisturizers like coconut oil, olive oil, and argan oil after deep conditioning. Oils act as a sealant on your hair which holds moisture.

Another tip for dry hair is to use a cool air humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air around you.

Straight hair problems – If you like your hair to be straight but have frizzy out of control hair, use straightening shampoos and conditioners.

Look for keywords on the labels that say 'sleek or smooth'. You can also blow dry your hair when its almost dry, with the dryer above your hair blowing down. Gently brush it down with a vented brush for even straighter hair.

Hair pomades also help keep your straight style. Use them frequently but sparingly. You won't need a lot of this product to work well!

Curly hair problems – If you have voluptuous curls but your hair won’t cooperate with you to get the curls you seek, try curling shampoos. Also, try allowing your hair to dry naturally, and scrunch your hair into more curls. You can also braid your hair when its wet and allow it to dry naturally too. This creates naturally curly hair. If your hair starts frizzing, use smoothing creams that will help defrizz your hair in a snap.

Dull hair problems – Everyone (in their right mind) wants their hair to look shiny and luscious. One of the best products on the market is Biosilk Silk Therapy. You can also look for sleek hair shampoos and conditioners. Keeping your hair moisturized gives your hair the ability to refract light, which helps create shiny hair.

There are also many products for shiny hair on the market that promote more shine. Any product that helps lay down the hair cuticle, creates more ability for your hair to look like spun gold.

Remember too, that moisture helps your hair look and feel silky. Its best to use deep conditioning treatments at least once a month, especially during extreme weather conditions like you find in the hot summer months or cold winter months.

You should also try hair glazes like Sebastian Cellophanes and Redkin Shades EQ. You can find them in different hair colors or in a clear glaze that doesn’t add color. Either way, they really help create more shine!

Hair growth hair problems - When your hair seems to stop growing, its not good news. Genetics, hormones, and a variety of other problems can cause this condition. Fortunately, there are products that help hair growth. Hair vitamins are a great way to boost hair growth, especially Super Biotin and Brewers Yeast.

Other ways to help hair grow, is to massage your scalp when you're showering. Massage stimulates circulation, which in turn stimulates the hair follicles into action. Regular scalp massage can improve hair growth.

Also, eating the right foods helps a lot. If your diet is full of junk food, you can't expect your hair to react positively. Eat more healthy foods that supply your body with vitamins naturally. This is especially important because lack of hair growth can lead to hair loss!

Color hair problems – This is a mixed bag. Sometimes you use the wrong hair color and sometimes you can’t get rid of a bad color. Literally everyone who uses hair color should know the basics before they even start. Hair color can be tricky, even for seasoned hairdressers.

For example. All hair colors have a color base. Its usually red, blue, or green. Some hair colors, like reds in shades of mahogany, magenta, plum, and violet can have a red and blue base. That’s how you get different shades of red and purple. (red+blue=purple.) If you apply a purple base to blonde hair, you might like the color for a while. If you get tired of it however, you must use color removers or bleach to your hair to get it out. These can be very harsh on your hair and sometimes you’re left with pink colors.

Of course, there are other hair problems with coloring your hair. Some people overlap color, which leaves hair susceptible to breakage. You don’t need to do a root to tip color every time you color, but most women do just that. Coloring your roots every month and refreshing your overall color every couple of months, is the best way to keep your hair healthy.

If you really want to keep your hair looking its best, learn the basics first. A simple home hair color guide, gives you all the information you need to color your hair successfully.
