Hair Color Problems - Roots Always Lighter than the Rest of Hair
Q) I am having hair color problems.
When I color my hair why are the roots always a lighter shade? It doesn't matter what color I use, they always come out 2-3 shades lighter than the rest of my hair. Any advice?
Professional Hair Care Answer - The heat from your scalp is probably processing the color much faster than the rest of your hair. There are two ways to 'skin this cat', so to speak.
You can:
1) Color your roots last and don't leave the color on for as long as the rest of your hair. That will help you from over-processing your roots and the color will show up darker.
Or:
2) Use a 10 volume peroxide for your roots only. You will have to save about 1/2 the color (or less is your hair isn't that thick) and mix the color separately than the rest of the color.
You will need 2 color bottles on hand to do this. To make your own 10 volume peroxide, simply water down a 20 volume peroxide. Do this by mixing the 20 volume, 1/2 and 1/2 with water. Shake well and only used purified water. Sometimes the water at home can be full of tannins, chlorine, etc. (If you're using a 40 volume, you'll need to make it 20 volume using the same method.) Mix the peroxide and color according to manufacturers directions. (i.e. 1:1)
This should resolve your hair color problems so your roots will match the rest of your hair.
I would be more specific but you didn't say which peroxide or color you're using. Using a lower volume peroxide should help a lot. It is used for deposit only. If you've ever wanted to know more about coloring your own hair at home, please review my ebook, Home Hair Color Guide.
