Hair Color Lowlights Question

Q) My question is about hair color lowlights.

I have pale blonde hair, thanks to Clairol, and was thinking about putting some caramel through it. I watched your video and saw how to do it but I was wondering do I just put them on the top layers of my hair or underneath some also? I also want to thank you so much for all the great info and videos. I found your site last night and purchased your ebook :) Also cut layers in my hair for the first time in my life! Thanks and have a Blessed day!

Professional Hair Care Answer - To put highlights/lowlights in a specific area is easy. Where you typically part your hair is a good place to start for surface highlights.

Part your hair where you normally part it. Choose chunky or small sections of your hair along the part and start your caramel hair color lowlights along the part. When you're satisfied with the amount you have, make another vertical part, parallel with your first part, (to the left or right), so that you can't see the color you've just applied. Select sections along the second part you make, and repeat the process along that part. After you're finished with one side (left or right), move on to the other side and repeat the process again.

You need to start timing any color you use, from the absolute last color you apply!

To get some hair color lowlights underneath your hair, part your hair off vertically and clip the top of your hair out of the way. You can use any amount of hair for the lower section you choose. Its completely up to you. After you've parted and clipped your hair, divide the hair that's left into left and right sections. This allows for easier access to your hair. Select sections of your hair (chunky or subtle) one at a time and then move on to the next. Hair clips are a must have when you color your hair so have them on hand. This is particularly important if you have thick hair. Keep choosing small or large sections with the parts you make and repeat this process until you are satisfied with the amount of hair color lowights you have.

Where you choose to place your lowlights or highlights is really entirely up to you, if you color your hair at home. You can have as many or as few as you like. I never really know what I'm going to color when I start. I just start somewhere and go from there, using my parted sections. That's really part of the fun when you color your own hair!
