Hair Color Fades Too Fast
by Madeline

I am a senior citizen and have thick, coarse, gray wirey hair. My hair looks good when I leave the salon but after one washing using the shampoo the salon suggests, (Pureology), my hair color fades and my hair is dry and frizzy. (I also use Redkin Color Extend conditioner.)
My stylist uses Redkin permanent color on my hair. This is supposed to be a good salon and she has advanced training on color. I am so disgusted! Can you help me?

Have you talked to your hairdresser about these issues? I should think she would be amicable to helping you with this.
There are a couple of things though that stand out to me, though.
Why not just rinse your hair a couple of times instead of shampooing it at first. Then apply your conditioner. Also, leave a small amount of conditioner on your hair instead of rinsing it all out. This will help 'tame' your hair and keep it properly moisturized.
Gray hair is very resistant to color. Your stylist should be using a color that's specifically made for
gray hair.
Furthermore, if she's using a dark hair color, they have very dense color molecules. Seeing hair color in the shower is typical the first times you shampoo after getting a color. There is not a lot you can do about that however. Its just the nature of the beast and why I suggest rinsing instead of shampooing. You'll still see color in the shower, but it won't be as much. (This is also typical for most red colors too!)
I do wonder about your water source too. If you have hard water or heavily chlorinated water in your home, your water may be part of the problem.
The products you use are good products for your hair but you might try something different if what you're using doesn't work. I've never been a big Redkin fan but there are many people who love their products.
I love
John Frieda Brilliant Brunettes conditioner but you might also try a
leave in conditioner on your hair. If you don't have a leave in conditioner, you can use a small amount of body lotion to moisturize your hair.
Your hair might also benefit from a
smoothing product or
glossifier. I use
Dumb Blonde Smoothing Stuff even though I have brown hair. It works fine for all hair color types!
Another consideration is to do a occasional
deep conditioning treatment. Gray wirey hair is the worst and deep conditioners help a lot!
Hask placenta is dirt cheap and works wonders on stressed hair!
Also, make sure the shampoo you're using doesn't have sulfites.
Loreal Everpure is one newer product on the market to try but
Matrix Biolage Color Care shampoo is a great product too.
